MX Alarms - Proposed changes

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

MX Alarms - Proposed changes

Post by mcrossley »

Due to changes in browser permissions over the years, the ability for MX alarms to generate Notifications and play sounds is no longer possible unless you make some configuration changes to your browser. Even then some people haven't been able to get them to work.

I propose to remove these two features in future release.

Shout out now if you think this is bad idea

I have no use for sound or notifications, so I won’t be missing them.

But just for reference I’m quite sure that for example outlook.com webmail (or corporate M365) is still able to play sound for incoming mail without any permission adjustments. Also some websites still do have videos that trigger with sound without any interaction. So there still must be a way to achieve this, but no idea how complex it is.

For now, you can play sounds from a page (with user permission), but only from secure https pages. Iirc that ability is already scheduled to be removed, sounds will only be allowed as a result of a user action.

I don't use them so I abstain from voting.

I have notification set but no sounds active. Now I'm not sure what notification was supposed to do. What is important to me is that the action which sends a message via pushover is critical so as long as that continues to work I'm fine.

Does the notification mean the email you get when the alarm is triggered? If it does I would vote to keep that.

These are nothing to do with email. I'm not proposing to remove that function.

Notifications are messages that appear in the OS notification area. Down in the system tray in Windows. Normally they have things like, the system needs to reboot, you have an email, updates available etc.
