Realtime.txt file - noobie question(s)

First post, so first things first - thanks to Steve for a great bit of software. My Wh1090 should arrive this week, but I've been prepping the website...

Having read the manuals and FAQ I think I know the answer to this one, but here goes:

I wanted to configure my website so that the Silverlight realtime controls pulled the realtime data from my 'data logging' PC at home. The idea was that the basic webpages would be updated every 15 mins say, and thus remove the ftp transfer of realtime data every 10 secs whether anyone was viewing it not (I pay for bandwidth usage on my website).

So I wanted Cumulus to generate the realtime.txt file and copy it to another location on the data logger where an internal website would serve it up to be available to the internet website.

From what I have read (and tried) this isn't possible, if the realtime file is generated it is always uploaded (unless generated at the 'normal' update interval).

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum.

Cumulus does expect to FTP the realtime file, however you could use the Files tab in internet configuration to copy a file to a local folder.

An identical realtime.txt file can be written using webtags, and processed in realtime and saved locally.

What I would say is that the bandwidth requirements for realtime are tiny. Works out at about 180Mb a month. I guess your bandwidth allowance is Gb's per month

Thanks David, I will look at making a custom realtime file, I hadn't realised that the 'file processing' could be done in realtime independently of the FTP.

It's more that it 'feels' wrong to be transferring the data when it isn't being used than the cost - though I am billed by the MB the cost is tiny.

As a suplementary question, it appears Cumulus does not support SFTP? Again I feel uncomfortable continually sending my username/password across the 'net in clear. (I do too much work on 'secure' systems I guess!)

I'd make SFTP support a feature request for the future if possible.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
enabling the realtime option on Cumulus' internet settings page results in Cumulus writing the realtime.txt file to the \Cumulus folder locally - at the interval specified.

I'll look into doing SFTP at some point, probably in Cumulus 2.

maybe so - but my test rig has no FTP defined :)
