Stupid ( probably ) new boy

Post by grapee »

Hi

Forgive me if this has been covered before or I have missed something.

Mr Claus bought me a Maplin N96GY AWS and in searching the www I came across this forum, and have noted elsewhere that the general concencus is that Cumulus software is a better bet than Easy Weather.
Thus far I tend to agree but on reading through the help sections I note that in the Data folder under Prog Files/Cumulus there should be a text file dayfile.txt and another file for each month.
I assume the monthly one gets created when the new month starts so I can understand why it does not exist as yet but my data folder is empty and I have searched the whole PC in vain.
My questions are
1. Why ?
and 2. Does it matter, as Cumulus seems to be remembering data.

Also, would anybody expect to see a maximum wind gust of 14.5mph 3 days out of the last 4 ?

Thanks in advance for any feedback that may be forthcoming.

Cheers

Graeme

You're using Vista, so this applies (if you ignored the recommendation to install outside Program Files):

It's possible. The Fine Offset stations seem to have a discrete set of wind values they can give (in steps of 0.3 m/s or something like that). But there may be other explanations to do with how your anemometer is sited etc.

And also, regarding the wind values, the past few days especially, and since before yesterday when the north easterly stream started to affect us, have been very calm, hence the clear skies and cold weather. So wouldn't expect any higher values for the past few days (until yesteday).

Hi Steve - many thanks - you are absolutely spot on - I did ignore the whole readme thing - I tend not to look at them - a lesson learnt

Yes - the siting is not ideal and is quite likely to give some spurious results - despite this I still would not have expected the exact same figure on 3 out of 4 days !

The days that had the exact same value were Wednesday, Thursday and yesterday but it seemed to me to be an improbable coincidence.

Expect more stupid questions winging your way !

Cheers
