This gadget is brilliant but I would like it to show the dewpoint value rather than the default windchill value. I've tried editing the setting.ini file within the installed folder and no matter what number I enter or even the negative value it just shows the default windchill value, the other settings do alter the way the gadget runs e.g the update interval.
Hope you can help me out. :?
How about this in your settings.ini?:

Code: Select all

temperature2 = 4;   // dew point.         // between 0 and 50, or negative for no 2nd value.

Is there a list of the values for numbers 0 to 50?

It's an index into the fields in realtime.txt:

http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/a/Realtime.txt

Note that you need to subtract one from the "Field #" to get an index starting from zero.

I edited to
temperature2 = 4; // dewpoint. // between 0 and 50, or negative for no 2nd value.
but it still just showing the default value.
Now when i go into the windows sidebar folder were it shows the Gadget folder there is a Settings.ini file now right at the bottom it list
interval="30"
temperature2=
sitename="0"
now when i alter the settings.ini and change the interval to 60 and the sitename back to 1 in cumulusih gadget folder the settings also show up in the Settings.ini in the windows sidebar folder and the gadget corresponds but not the temperature2= that always remains blank no matter what. :?

The realtime.txt file IS uploaded properly to the server. As for the gadget however it only updates (or bothers to re-read the realtime.txt) if you click the wrench and do anything, even cancel. When it reloads from that little diversion it DOES read the realtime.txt file and is current....but you have to manually do that every time you want current info.

On a possibly related subject, in Cumulus, configuration, internet, files, I've managed to confuse myself over the handling of the cumulusxml.tpl file. I have the full path (C:\cumulus\cumulusxml.tpl) on the left and I have realtime.xml on the right with checks in process and ftp. Wondering if I've messed this up somehow....I'm not seeing the realtime.xml file on my server...but....to be truthful, with all this wonderful software to play with, and my efforts to feed this onto some monitors at the airport I'm responsible for, I've sorta lost track of what does what between Cumulus, Realtime and the Gadget. <sigh> Just too much for an old man I guess.

Have you just put "realtime.xml" in the 'remote file' box, or a full path?

I THINK I had a full path at one point but with my messing around I don't have one now and have NO CLUE where it should point...local or web server for instance.

Ok after editing the Settings.ini in the windowsidebar folder and entering temperature2=4 there instead of in the original cumulusih gadget folder the dewpoint is now showing on the gadget correctly :D

Yes: the realtime.txt file is updated once per minute - and the gadget runs flawlessly here: set to update every 60 minutes, which it does, no hands :)

No forecast picture, as you have not specified that in Cumulus.

So cannot really understand why it does not update on your system.

For me to investigate further, please:
- stop the gadget
- in the cumulusih.gadget folder (same place where the settings.ini file lives) create an empty debug.txt file
- restart the gadget
- run it for a while until it seems to hang
-stop it
- attach the debug.txt file in a post here - or in a PM

hmmmmm....updates on your system but not on any of mine. OK then...I've modified the html page for the gadget....maybe that is the difference between you seeing it and me not.

On the gadget, can the Last Updated time be changed so that the date is mm/dd/yy rather than the dd/mm/yy it is currently showing. I know it gets this from the realtime.txt file and I've set everything I can find in cumulus but I'm still getting the wrong format. Is there a place in an .ini or .xml file that would better control that date format in the realtime.txt file?

Something in your Windows setup - or the way you installed/started the gadget must be wrong, and I have no idea what it is.
The gadget starts writing to the debug.txt file immediately at startup, if it stays empty, something is definitely wrong :(

I downloaded your file, renamed it to mike.gadget, installed it, started it, and it has been running happily ever since, updating every minute, running back to back with my own copy of cumulusih being fed from the same realtime.txt and displaying exactly the same figures.

Please start all over again:
- copy your own version of my gadget somewhere else (to save your work)
- delete your version (all versions...) of the gadget from the Windows Gadgets display
- download, rename, re-install a fresh copy of my version of the gadget from the 1st post in this thread
- stop it
- create an empty debug.txt file in the C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\cumulusih.gadget folder
- modify the settings.ini file in the same place to your liking
- restart the gadget
- run it
and if it does not update: stop it and send me the debug.txt file.

That is the date/time format you have set in your Windows system.
Cumulus uses your Windows date/time format, not just for realtime.txt, but for all its other logs etc.
(And if your change your Windows settings, you'll end up with corrupted Cumulus logs....)

It's working perfectly Dane....so CLEARLY I messed it up trying to change the looks of it. I'll start again and be more careful...checking it more often to make sure I haven't broken the updating function. Once again, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Know anything about changing the date string in the realtime.txt file to be mm/dd/yy rather than the default dd/mm/yy?

Thought I was pretty good at Windows...but didn't know that one. THANKS
