Sudden increase in rainfall after midnight

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Sudden increase in rainfall after midnight

Post by Vegit8 »

Running build Cumulus MX v.3.6.8 build 3084
I dont update the version unless there is a need, for bug fixes or new features.

Interesting... I was going to start a new post, but I think this is linked - "Roll over issues"?

As I have mentioned before I manage a site / installation for a friend (www.charlesdowding.co.uk/weather), as a professional gardener weather / data are important to him.
The other day he questioned some of the rainfall totals for July - he is viewing the figures via beteljuice's .php pages (/betel_datasummary.php) - this sources values from the dayfile.

I understand that the dayfile merely rolls up data from the relevant monthlog.txt

I imported data from July23 into an xls sheet, scrolling through the data I came across 2 instances where the rainfall totals started the day (data is reset at midnight) with values that are obviously incorrect.

Below is a screenshot for 15/07 - 16/07. The day starts at 0 (correct) then within 5 mins the 'rainfall so far' value has jumped to 38mm! with a rainfall rate of 0.

I have also found another instance where the day starts at 5.4mm (13/07 - 14/07)

I have uploaded the Julylog file in xls format - with column headers added

Re: This year records issue

I'd need to see the MXdiags file covering that rollover.

This is a different issue though, so I have split the topic.

There were some odd things happening with your rain counter.

When CMX starts at 11:06 it reports that the value the previous midnight = 478.0, current value = 479.4

so 1.4 mm so far today.

CMX cannot download five days of your historic data from weatherlink.com because it is an out-of-date version.

then we get:

Code: Select all

2023-07-15 11:10:00.884 Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 15/07/2023 11:10:00 raindaystart = 509.6 rain counter = 479.4
The start of day rain counter has suddenly increased to 509.6, not sure why. So, there is now negative rainfall for the day.

At midnight there has been no further rain, and the start of day counter is reset to current value of 479.4.

Then at 00:01 the counter has suddenly increased by 38.4 mm, as indicated by the new high hourly rainfall record, and confirmed by the log message at 00:05, which records the counter is now 517.8 mm.

After 10:45 it appears to start raining and the counter increments slowly.

Without debug logging on I cannot see exactly what has happened, but that rain counter behaviour is not normal. Did you edit the annual rainfall on your station?

No.

Oh... I didn't know that!

There was a situation a few days before that where there was some sort of power failure - he lives in the sticks.
The WLL device uploaded its backlog once power was restored, then CMX attempted to get the backup data when it was restarted.
Maybe that's where the problem lays?

I'll have to get him updated, then roll back the date so that I get data from (say) the 1st of July.

Davis changed the format of the historic data responses and that broke a simple sanity check in CMX before it attempts to use the data.

If the sanity check wasn't there it would have carried on working normally!
