Need som help with upgrade

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Need som help with upgrade

Post by Armond »

Hi!
I have some questions about how to upgrade CMX on my RPi.

1. Stop Stop Cumulus MX.

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop cumulusmx
2. Make sure you have a backup copy of the CumulusMX folder. Does it mean that I should copy the whole folder /opt/CumulusMX/ in RPi and put it for example in my computer? (just a backup if something goes wrong with the upgrade)
3. Copy the entire contents of the zip file to your CumulusMX folder. Does it mean that I should download the zip-file from https://github.com/cumulusmx/CumulusMX/releases/, for example CumulusMXDist3241.zip, and extract the files and replace the files on my RPi in / opt/CumulusMX/?
4. Start Cumulus MX again.

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl start cumulusmx

Not sure what the question exactly is, but I think that what you write leads to a correct update.

Hi Armond,

This is my upgrade procedure on my Raspberry Pi :-

Download release from https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Software#Late ... n_download
Extract zip file

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~/Downloads/CumulusMX $ unzip xxxxx.zip
Stop service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl stop cumulusmx
Do backup of existing release

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:/opt $ sudo cp -R CumulusMX CumulusMX_XXXX_backup
Upgrade files

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~/Downloads/CumulusMX/CumulusMX $ sudo cp -R * /opt/CumulusMX/
Start service

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl start cumulusmx
If you have installed CMX into a different directory then you will need to change the paths accordingly.

My system logs every 5 mins so I wait for a log to complete before doing the upgrade. I tend to have 3 command windows open at the same time, one for the service stop and start, one for the backup and one for the upgrade. In this way the whole process takes less than a minute so minimum downtime.

Hope that helps.

Hi,
I use Windows so not RPi but presume it would work in a similar way. I download the new version zip and unzip in its own new folder in a \CumulusMX-new_versions folder - i.e. unzip to C:\CumulusMX-new_versions\CumulusMXDist3241 which then has the new version as C:\CumulusMX-new_versions\CumulusMXDist3241\CumulusMX with all the new files and folders...

Then with current CMX stopped Copy ALL the content (all files and folders) from that new version and Paste in your existing CumulusMX install. Then restart, and new version CMX will run using the previous Cumulus.ini file, and existing \data and \Reports. I usually do a full copy in \CumulusMX-backup to quickly restore to the previous working version if needed, just in case...

It takes about 2 minutes to do and then all set to go with the updated version.

Enjoy,
Paul

On Rpi by default the downloaded zip file usually goes into the /Downloads folder. In my example I had moved it into a /Downloads/CumulusMX folder where I ran the unzip command but it doesn't really matter where you put it as long as you navigate to the appropriate folder before running the copy (cp) command.

Code: Select all

pi@raspberrypi:~/Downloads/CumulusMX $ unzip xxxxx.zip
In the example above the "pi@raspberrypi:~/Downloads/CumulusMX $" part shows the command prompt and the current folder path. The "unzip xxxxx.zip" part is the actual command.

Hope that makes more sense.
