With Dane's help i now have a working cumulus with data starting on the !st January.
Many thanks IB. I’ve inserted all of the necessary date lines to complete a Jan 1 start to a new year. Next job is to try to get the ‘new’ Cumulus to ‘see’ the 09 monthly log files so that I can do a lookup from within Cumulus. I’ve moved Dec09log.txt back into the cumulus data folder but Cumulus does not seem to be configured to ‘see’ it when I do a ‘View/Month’ and select it.
A thought ... does Cumulus use the (Month)09log.txt file for this data enquiry or the Dayfile.txt file?

Mostly dayfile.txt. Gale days come from the monthly log.

Geoff,
your new dayfile.txt is OK: your 'trends' graphs for rain and min/max/ave go back to 14. Dec.
About month file: see e-mail..

Thanks all (especially Dane & Steve)
I am now carefully working back through my original Dayfile.txt checking for errors or obvious anomolies (and I've found a few) and then appending it to the top of the current Dayfile.txt a month at a time. I've just completed December and November and with the data inserted I've checked my current Cumulus for integrity - and to date all is well.
I'm going to wait till tomorrow and the date/day change to see if any nasties emerge before working through the other four months to when I first set up the weather station.

Well I'm now restored and back to May 2009, when I set up my weather station with Cumulus. Thanks for the helpful support and advise - all my trouble seem to have arisen from a combination of neglect of the data and an abortive attempt to correct a rain error that made thing worse. Not the software .... just the user!
I do have some questions of anomalous rading but that is fo another thread and another day!
thanks again......
