PHP Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel. Errors

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

PHP Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel. Errors

Post by M1DUL »

Hello all,

Since Mark made the upload.php file, and I changed my upload to use PHP settings, these errors sometimes appear in the MXdiags folder.

This shows what it should look like, when working correctly.

I see the same errors in my logfile but the occurrences are rare (few times a day) and especially around 02h00 when my provider apparently is 'doing some things'. It can happen everywhere apparently when the server is a bit overloaded I guess. Although I would like see a bit more info on the 'base exception' until now I don't worry too much. Everything so far works fine despite errors like these.

Hello HansR, & All,
Thank you HansR, for your message.

Just an update to this problem, I get about 130 – 170 of these errors, every day. I am not sure if it is my Internet provider Virgin Media on 1 GB connection or if it is my website host server problem which is Host Presto,

Many thanks for any information about these errors, or what causes them? I have noticed that it does it anytime of day or night.
Mike

It has to be your hosting service as I am a Virgin Media customer on a 1.3GB Volt Internet connection and I see no PHP SLS/TLS errors.

Hello David,
Thank you for your reply to my message. I will get Intouch with my hosting provider, and see if they can help at all.

Many thanks once again.

Hi All,
I have sent a support message to Hostpresto and this is what they have said, see below.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for contacting support.

Could you please provide us with the exact steps to replicate the issue on our end so we can investigate this further for you.

Regards,
Rob

This is what I sent to them.

Dear HostPresto Customer Service,
Since I changed my upload to use PHP settings, in the Cumulus MX Weather software. These errors, shown below, appear in the Cumulus MX log folder.

14:22:25.675 PHP[69]: Uploading realtime.txt
2023-04-17 14:22:25.684 PHP[69]: Uploading realtimegauges.txt

2023-04-17 14:22:25.728 PHP[69]: Base exception - The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

I hope you can help me to sort out this problem, to prevent this from happening.

Kindest regards
Mike

Has anyone got any information that I can send to them to explain this problem?

Many Thanks.
Mike

Hello Mark & All,
I have updated to version Cumulus MX v.3.25.0 build 3241 this afternoon.

As you can see, I am still receiving these errors in the MXdiags folder.
I now receive as many as 400 each day!!

2023-04-24 18:02:45.275 PHP[222] Retrying upload to realtime.txt
2023-04-24 18:02:45.283 PHP[222]: Error uploading to realtimegauges.txt
2023-04-24 18:02:45.283 PHP[222]: Error uploading to realtimegauges.txt - Exception Type: System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException
Message: An error occurred while sending the request.
Inner Exception...
Exception Type: System.Net.WebException
Message: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

I am curious as to where this data is coming from. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Kindest regards
Mike

But may I ask did you check the installed version of .Net because that is what the article is indicating and you can only find that out by checking the installed programs. If you have and the correct version is installed then I apologise.

Hello David,
Thank you for replying to me.

My PC is fully up-to-date, I have just checked. I have Windows 11 Pro installed.
If your Win 11 PC is fully up-to-date you will have .NET 6 and 7 installed (try dotnet --info on the command prompt). 4.8 Framework against which CMX is built should be default enabled. (Check the settings are according to this link, run control panel for this and just check the 'Turn Windows Features on or off'). It most likely is as below (it was on my machine) That may have an influence on compatibility but I am bot sure. I think @Mark needs a say on this.
    Schermafbeelding 2023-04-25 050607.png
Now I don't run on Windows so I can't check this. If it is really in Windows, I would assume others with Win 11 would have the same problem.

Are you able to inspect your logfiles on the server on errors or are those hidden by your provider. I think that would be interesting to know against the error message and the exception/inner exception info. The request is aborted because it cannot create the secure channel so you need the server errorlog info to determine the cause.

If there is nothing to be found at the server, your machine needs to be inspected deeper which I am not sure we can assist from here. But let's take it one step at a time: what does the server log say and what is the status of .NET Framework 4.8.

      Thank you, Hans & David,

You have suggested that I, (try dotnet --info on the command prompt) this command does not work on Windows 11.

I have attached MXdiags, Hostpresto Logs & also Windows features screen print for your information.

I would be very grateful for any of your expert advice.

I have managed to get dotnet --info command prompt to work, this is what it shows.

How do I check on hostpresto server to see what the status of .NET Framework 4.8. Is?

I would be very grateful for any of your expert advice.

@M1DUL: OK, I think it is not your machine.

I understood the error(s) are not continuous so it really is interesting what the other side - server - is doing. Were you able to find a server log to see what it says? We are not yet at the point of reproducing, it is just trying to see what the server is doing at the time you see the error, what is its response.

I think it would be good if @mcrossley has a suggestion on this.

You don't need to check for .NET on hostpresto - it is only used on the computer on which MX is running.

Looking at your website it appears all up-to-date. Do you still have a problem? If so, what is the problem other than the occasional failure to create an SSL connection to the server (which MX appears to be coping with just fine)?
