Connect to port 8998 from outside network

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Connect to port 8998 from outside network

Post by falkunmalti »

Hi

I have been running CMX for years successfully but recently have come up with an issue. I know how to connect to the dashboard with http://x.x.x.x/8998 and it works fine from inside my network. But if I try the same thing from outside the network using port forwarding, it does not work. I am sure that the port forward is correct. I also read somewhere that port 8998 is a "public" port. What could be the reason for this? Thanks.

can you clarify - are you using the external IP with the port? what other hardware is in-between this computer and your router? have you tried hosting a web server before? does that work from the outside? Do you have a DMZ on your network?

can you ping x.x.x.x.x:8998 from outside the network? Although are you trying to connect to the copied website, or the user interface? I'd be concerned if you were opening up your admin panel as the public could change your settings!
Ian.

Hi thanks for a quick answer.

No I am using the ip of the computer running cmx, the same way I do it within the network. I can ping the external ip on its own no problem. There is no other hardware and I can ping the ip address of the cmx computer no problem from outside the network. If I ping the cmx computer's ip :8998, I get a dns error. I just want to be able to connect to the user interface from outside the network. Maybe I should have clarified that. I guess I can see now that maybe it is not a good idea to do that. I didn't consider that before.
