hrs in Std. to change

Post by moppedhausi »

Hello Hans,

there are already many translations in the language files.
What do I have to do to change the Rain Rate "mm/hr" to "mm/Std." and at Sunshine today "hrs" in "Std." to change.
Or are these values hard-coded.

Good question!
I have not noticed this before. ‘hr’ should have been translated on my pages as well.

Aha...

There are some things involved here:
  1. Is it only the /hr (so the speed of change) or do you wish to translate or the units as well. I assume (and will probably keep it that way) that the units will not be translated. I see hr as kind of a unit ( just as s ).
  2. The space involved. Translating the "/hr" will have impact on the dashboard panels and the chart axis title and maybe some more. Especially e.g. the Wind panel might just start wrapping and will destroy the whole window or I would need to reduce the font size.
  3. None of the popular templates using multiple language have the possibility (or show) the translation of hr (or h) and nobody apparently has a problem with that.
So in summary, I am inclined not to translate that, though the /hr is always added explicitly after the unit so technically it would be possible to put that in a (general) parameter, but I think it would be confusing for foreign people accessing your site: a strange language has been compensated by a uniform display recognisable by everybody, where the numbers and the units give full understanding of what is there to see. I assume many non-German would not understand what Std would mean. I did not implement the runtime changeable language, but I did intend it to be comprehensible by strangers.

EDIT: and in the gauges this will not be changed, that is external so it would be two different systems in the display.

A German language file is available:

Unfortunately, because almost all of my visitors come from the surrounding area and foreign speakers don't get along with "Sonnenstunden Heute" either, so "hrs" doesn't help either.
