You are getting a server error 500 returned. Along with the message: "Response: 500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable root inside chroot()"

A quick search shows lots of info about what this error may be and ways to solve it. Like: https://www.liquidweb.com/kb/error-500- ... ot-solved/

I had the same issue while transferring from one host to another. 8 FTP connections seem to be the hot spot for hosts, anyway. I discovered that some of my extra files that I were FTP’ing were failing, it was some path errors that would cause the FTP to hang up and not close.

The solution was to stop all FTP and wait several hours and it would clear itself.

Also the 8 FTP limit applies to all FTP’s when using “shared hosting”. So I have three websites and three instances of Cumulus to update the sites.

FWIW, my host is HostGator.

Thank you. After much Googling and playing with permissions, the program is communicating with the website.

Update
123reg my hosting company are still unable to tell me what happened or why, but they are pleased I am working again. Thats great but not really helpful. As my issue has cleared at their end, they dont know what happened. The only thing they have said that makes sense is that "open" connections cannot be closed by me or via their control panel and are closed automatically at their end. Clearly this didnt happen.

I am still in conversation with them

Paul, if you ever want to try another hosting company I can recommend HostPresto based on the south coast.

Never had any issues with them and any queries are soon answered. The amount of analysis you can do on each web page is excellent.

Paul I also had used "HostPresto" and would have stayed with them except that https was an extra fee and my original plan had expired and would have meant a pretty sizable increase in cost. Moving to HostGator was a bit of a pain but everything is working. I mentioned the common limit of 8 FTP connections, I think a lot of these resellers share the configuration files. I also wonder if HostGator and HostPresto are subsidiaries under a common roof, I think there are other "Host......" 's out there.

As Ray said, great service and great folks, it was like they were just around the corner even though there was the big "pond" between us.

And Ray, not sure if you're aware but if you put a link on your site that will give you some credits.

Just to throw in another name Krystal Hosting, been with them a while now and no complaints at all. My basic plan cost about £50 for 12 months and they are UK based.

Thanks for that. I’ll make some enquiries. :D
