CumulusMX 3.22.4 - 8998 is closed

Hi
Background.......
I've had CumulusMX 3.0.0.0 running on a Raspberry Pi 3 since 2017. Perhaps it was time to run the latest version!
Having read all of the update notes and suggestions I decided that a clean install was the way ahead.

So the system is now CumulusMX 3.22.4 running on a Raspberry Pi 3 which is running the latest Bullseye operating system. Weather station is a Vantage Vue.

For a long time I was convinced that the issue was the Pi failing to communicate with the Weatherlink USB datalogger as connecting on port 8998 from a PC on the network showed that data on the dashboard was not updating. Interestingly running V3.22.4 on an old Windows 7 laptop worked OK with the weather station and the dashboard updates correctly.

I've now enabled data logging and debug logging. This morning I ran the laptop Windows system for 15 minutes followed by the Raspberry Pi system for 15 minutes and have been comparing the two Diagnostic files. The conclusion, the diagnostic files are identical with normal running, file generation/writing and LOOP behaving correctly gathering data.

The ISSUE:
Using the Raspberry Pi system, when I connect to CumulusMX via Port 8998 on another PC the following occurs:
1. Clicking on "Dasboard" I get a message that port 8998 is closed. The dashboard does not update and the "Cumulus update" and "Station Update" Times stay as "--:--:--"
2. Clicking on "Now" I get a message that port 8998 is closed.
3. Clicking on the other tabs I do not get the Connection Closed messages. Indeed I can go into settings and update items which are reflected in updates in Cumulus.ini.
4. The guages and the graphs do not show data.

I'm out of ideas and asking for help! I'm not sure if it is purely a Raspberry Pi issue or some weird interaction between CumulsMX and the Pi. Ideas would be welcomed.
Thanks
Roger

Do you have a firewall running on either the pi or your client. It sounds like the web socket connection is not getting through.

You could try showing you browser dev tools, look at the network tab, and refresh the main dashboard page - any errors there?

Hi Mark
Thanks for the prompt reply. Also thanks for pointing me down a different route!

So I tried a different PC on the network using Firefox and it works. I tried a different browser on this PC and it works.

I now know that it is ONLY Firefox on this PC that doesn't work - and that is the combination I usually use!! We will probably never know why but at least I can move ahead now.

Thanks again
Roger

Roger,

Have you got any Firefox extensions added/running?

Roger,
Couple of other things to check/try

1) What version of Firefox are you using? Do you update it regularly?

If it is not up to date maybe check this out .

Code: Select all

https://www.ryadel.com/en/firefox-this-address-is-restricted-override-fix-port/
Current version (ver: 108.0 ) does not have this option, so don't bother if you Firefox is current.
If you get through to this option are there any numbers in the value column

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Also if this is not the issue then disable the windows firewall for a short while to check out access.
********Remember to re activate the firewall................

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Last option to check is described here:

Code: Select all

https://kb.synology.com/en-me/DSM/tutorial/Whether_TCP_port_is_open_or_closed#:~:text=On%20a%20Windows%20computer,-Press%20the%20Windows&text=Press%20the%20Windows%20key%20%2B%20R,test%20the%20TCP%20port%20status.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the ideas.
This gets stranger and stranger and it is obviously some weird unique combination. While I'd love to solve it, but given I can use the dashboard with a different browser, I'll probably not devote much more time to this.

Update. It is the current version of Firefox.
1. My current system, Pi 3B, old raspian, CumulusMX 3.0.0.0 can be accessed on this PC with Firefox on Port 8998.
2. The "new system", a different Pi3B, Bullseye, CumulusMX 3.22.4 fails on Port 8998 on this PC with FireFox. But it OK on Firefox on other PCs on the network.
3. An experimental system running on a laptop under Win 7 with CululusMX 3.22.4 can be accessed on this PC with Firefox on Port 8998.

So the only failure is a combination of the new Pi3B with Firefox on this specific PC - weird.

I will try the new SD card build in the current Pi3B at some point and report back.
Happy to try out other ideas in case anyone else has an issue.

Roger

Just to check :

Do you have a firewall like ufw on the new Pi. If so could you run:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw status numbered
There may be a rule that is causing the issue .

Grasping at straws here !!!

and other firewalls are available. I am a windows man not Linux so you may need to hope a linux guru kicks in... sorry

Just a thought. I have run into issues, that sometimes Firefox refuses to open pages that are referred with ip address, but without http:// -prefix. So I would try adding it manually if already not used.

To be sure I would also try inprivate mode or clear browser cache completely just to make sure it is not a caching issue.

I have a computer and a tablet both running Windows 10 and using Microsoft Edge as the browser. Cumulus is running on a RPi 4B. Every time I upgrade Cumulus to the next version I can't access port 8998 on the computer but have no problems on the tablet. Clearing cache has no effect but I've discovered if I delete the cookies associated with Cumulus then it can access port 8998 again. Worth a try.

Trevor

!! SOLVED !!

Hi "SamiS" and Trevor.
Thanks for the ideas.
"SamiS". Firefox did work in a private window. Clearing the cache cured the problem - brilliant!!
Trevor - I din't need to get to your idea but I'll certainly remember that one in the future.

@Roger - Glad to have helped. Private browsing is quite a handy way to see if problems are cache related or not.

@Trevor - You made a good point also. In my mind clearing browser cache includes everything, both data and cookies. But modern browsers indeed do give user multiple options about what to delete or not. And at least Safari on iPad gives even possibility to delete cached data for a single website, so you don’t need to reset your browsing experience for other sites. I haven’t checked, but I presume this can be done on other browsers and operating systems also.

Regards,
Sami
