No rain on Ecowitt Stations

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

No rain on Ecowitt Stations

Post by The Dalek Hunter »

I have three CMX stations.

https://longsuttonweather.co.uk - Davis Vantage Pro 2 with a WLL

https://longsutton-weather.co.uk - Ecowitt GW1000B

https://www.angteck.co.uk - Ecowitt Wittboy

Yesterday we had a light rain shower or two. The Davis station reported 0.1 inches.

Both Ecowitt Stations recorded nothing.

However looking at the WSView Plus app and on my Ecowitt Website both Ecowitt stations did record 0.1 inches also - however nothing in CMX

Could you please zip up the logfile in MXdiags that covers the period of the rainfall and attach it to a reply to this topic.

My stations backup at 3:15 am via a cronjob.

Looking in MXdiags I have a file that I presume is the one you want - it is 20221204-031540.txt - is this the one you want zipping up?

If it covers the period of the rain, then yes. Look at the first and last timestamps in the file - if they encompass the period of rain then that is the file that will be useful.

This is the log file from the Ecowitt GW1000B station - I hope its the correct one.

I also have WeeWX connected to the Wittboy Station and that recorded the rain.

your Davis station reports rain on 03-Dec-2022 before midnight - the log you sent is starting 04-Dec-2022 - so nothing will be found.
Please send the earlier MXdiags log before the one you posted 8-)

two more questions
1. what rain gauge is connected to the GW1000 ? WS69/WH65 or WH40 ?
2. did you verify in the CMX settings for each instance if the proper rain gauge is (still) selected (Ecowitt sensor mappings) ?
I assume your GW1000 instance should have "Tipping Bucket" selected and your GW2000 instance should have "Piezo Rain" selected.

As requested - this is from the Ecowitt GW1000B station. The Davis CMX is reporting correctly. The two Ecowitt ones are not.

your log files look very scarce - did you set (tag) the debug option in the log file settings ? (Program Settings --> Logging Options --> Debug logging)
difficult to say what is going on if only rudimentary information is available ...

from the few logging entries one can see that the rain counter was increased ...

Please make sure the rain rauge settings are correct - and activate the debug logging - for both consoles/gateways

Now we will have to wait for the next rain event ....

Rain counter initialised on startup:

Code: Select all

2022-12-03 03:20:00.237 Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 03/12/2022 03:20:00 raindaystart = 19.50787399585 rain counter = 19.50787399585
First rain recorded:

Code: Select all

2022-12-03 20:10:00.410 Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 03/12/2022 20:10:00 raindaystart = 19.50787399585 rain counter = 19.51181100372
Further rain recorded:

Code: Select all

2022-12-03 20:40:00.229 Writing today.ini, LastUpdateTime = 03/12/2022 20:40:00 raindaystart = 19.50787399585 rain counter = 19.51574801159
Dayfile entry saved at midnight rollover:
2022-12-04 00:00:00.178

Code: Select all

03/12/22,10.3,54,09:46,3.0,23:55,8.1,12:06,1016.6,23:51,1024.4,00:14,0.0,20:04,0.0,5.2,21.1,3.3,09:19,86,01:26,98,07:28,0.00,1.9,8.1,12:06,7.0,12:07,1.4,23:56,0.0,00:00,3.0,23:55,6.9,12:01,2.3,23:55,77,13.1,0.0,142,12:03,1.0,12:02,8.1,12:06,3.0,23:55,8.1,12:06,302.7,0.0,00:00
The 15th entry is the one showing rain amount for the day - which is 0.0. So the station is sending in rainfall data as evidenced by the incrementing counter, but it is not being added to the daily total. Probably one for @mcrossley - but as @gyvate says there could be some configuration to do in the settings pages.

It looks like it may be a rounding thing.

The rainfall recorded for the day is 0.2mm, which is less than 0.01 inches (0.0078740), so it has failed to reach the threshold of 0.01 inches of rain and zero is recorded as inches of rain uses two decimal places by default.

It has rained "a bit more" today and all three stations are showing 0.1 inches at the time this message was posted.
