Wiki - lack of mobile support

Post by freddie »

The default skin used by the Wiki is not mobile friendly. I've done some research on this aspect and have found a skin (actually bundled with the default install) that, coupled with an extension (MobileFrontend) that will make the wiki more useable on mobile devices. I have run a quick trial using the skin and, although it does change colours and move menus around a bit, it looks okay to me.
I would like to trial the skin for 24 hours. Would this present any problems?

OK for me.
I assume it will be working fine on the laptop as well?
I mean, for me that would be a must!

The top row is overlaid on my phone, and all the content is squashed into a 50% width column on the right.

Yes, that's why I want to trial the mobile friendly skin.

Haha no, I was just asking if anybody had any objections. I'll probably do it at the weekend.

I implemented the change this evening. It doesn't affect the desktop experience at all. If you are on a mobile device and would prefer the desktop view then there is a link to it at the bottom of each page (or use your browser's inbuilt desktop switch).

Personally I find it to be a much pleasanter experience now the mobile handling has changed.

Obviously if anybody experiences problems then it is an easy process to back out the change and revert to previous settings.

Yes it looks good. I do have a problem with the dispatch table though:
  • On the phone you need to slide it right/left but that is not indicated
  • On the tablet it does not remain in the yellow area but overflows into the white, sliding seems not possible
If you need screenshots let me know.

Yes, I've seen the thing with mobile. I've only done a few of tweaks to the main page (removing superfluous information and punctuation) and have yet to apply the "slimfast plan" to the majority of the page.

Regarding your tablet - do you not have enough screen to use the desktop view? It may be a moot point anyway, due to the whole page being WIP.

Apologies - too many unexplained terms in that post:

"slimfast plan" means the page will become much smaller.
You may be familiar with "moot point", but just in case you're not - substitute with "irrelevance".

Apologies again if this comes across as condescending.

@freddie: well there are more words that I don't get (what is WIP?). But anyway, take your time, I won't be working the wiki on my mobile devices anyway. And wrt the tablet I can't say if it's too wide or too small, I just see the wiki main page does not fit on that mobile device.

Condescending ah... dont worry, you just hit a field of ignorance on my side
