How do I correct month rain and year rain easily

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

How do I correct month rain and year rain easily

Post by broadstairs »

I am still puzzled as to how to correct both month rain and year rain values. My GW1100 missed a tip of my rain gauge (I know because my GW1000 did not miss the tips and has a higher value). Now fixing day rain was easy but how on earth do I fix month and year values easily. My issue is that with CMX it does not seem straight forward, with WD I simply change the values in the GW1100 and WD uses all of these values immediately. This is not the first time I've had to try to do this and failed in CMX to fix both month and year rain. Last time as it was a test system I just started afresh and set the initial value for year rain to date, however now I don't want to do that as I have quite a lot of other data.

Is there a simple guide on how to do this?

Might be being dumb here but why can't you use the CMX editors to fix the monthly and yearly totals?

Well if I can find the right paces I'd do it. However I have since found that the year total to date in the log file is correct but the value shown on the dashboard is wrong. I don't want to correct the month total in the wrong place in case it screws up reports but so far I'm not sure where to fix the month total. To fully correct the rain I need to add rain for yeaterday.

I've a separate thread about the dashboard year rain. WD just uses the absolute values from the gateway which makes life so easy fixing values!

This is becoming even more confusing as the values in the log file for September are now correct and the month total on the dashboard is good but not the year total which is well behind what it should be both in web tag and dashboard.

The yearly editor will automagically read all the day file and produce a new total so have you tried that?

No because the day file is wrong and only contains data up to the 5th and even if I add the current total of 186.2 from the day file to the 1.7 from the 6th it is still wrong because the GW1100 has recorded 188.9 for the current year which is correct.

If the dayfile is wrong how about running the CreateMissing program https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Calculate_Mis ... Missing.22

Can you explain exactly what is wrong with the dayfile totals?

As I explained in the other thread, the current year total is total from the dayfile, plus todays rainfall.

If you are happy all the daily values in the dayfile are correct, but the yearly rainfall is still wrong (not sure why this would be - unless you have missing days?), then you need to use the year-to-date value (and year - 2022) in Station Settings | Annual Rainfall to add the "missing" amount.

Mark what I do not understand is why the monthly log file shows the correct rainfall total ytd for 2022 but the ryear web tag and the dashboard show a lesser total rainfall ytd and even still wrong if I add the current day rain total to this value. How can the month file be correct and the day file wrong? I also think it is wrong for the year value to be calculated from the day file which does not contain any data from the current day, a YTD value should be just that the total including the current day at the time it is shown.

<#ryear> will return the most up to date rainfall, right up to the present time.

The issue is that tag does NOT show the correct total and since it is derived from the day file (according to Mark) cannot show the true total value because the day file does not contain the current day. Even adding the current rain to it does not make it agree with the monthly log file.

Hi Stuart,

Mark quoted the following:
the current year total is total from the dayfile, plus todays rainfall.
So current day's rainfall is included in the web tag. Maybe you should zip up your monthly log files plus your dayfile and someone might be able to identify where the discrepancy is.

Regards,
Trevor

I suspect that a previous rainfall correction will have been done incorrectly as I did have an issue with a spiders web completely stopping the bucket tipping. This was my reason for asking how to correctly fix rain issues as not doing it right could cause problems.

No one has given me a definitive method of correcting the rain totals which could be for the current day or a day in the past. I strongly feel this needs to be explained clearly and explicitly so there is no doubt in anyone's mind how it works, especially for new users who could easily screw up their data.

On WD this has been a big issue in the past and I do not believe it is completely fixed now, however because WD can use the gateway rain data exclusively for Ecowitt gateways this issue has been eliminated - just correct the gateway totals and WD is correct!

Identify the month in which the total is incorrect. Identify the day of the month in which the total is incorrect. Edit the corresponding day entry using the dayfile editor (using the interface, select Data logs -> Dayfile). The second step looks like the most complicated, but can be achieved by checking the total at the end of each day and comparing with what you see in the Dayfile editor.
