Autoupdate of web page

Hi,

First post so please be gentile with me :)

Just purchased one of the WH1081 USB weather stations from Maplin (late Christmas present to myself :) ) and whilst I still have to mount the sensor array (probably at the weekend) I've tested things and all seems to be working. I stumbled on the Cumulus software following a link in a review of the hardware, and must say it's fantastic. Much better than the software that came with the station.

Anyway, I've spent the evening setting up Cumulus and have managed to set website up http://micro-heli.co.uk/weather/index.htm

The problem I have, is that I can perform the manual update but even though I've places a tick in the "auto update" box the website doesn't appear to be updating, even though I've change the update period to 5min and also enabled realtime with a 5 second interval.

can someone advise what I've done wrong, or what needs to change ?

Thanks

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, and welcome!
Have you read the article in the Wiki: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/index.php?ti ... site_setup ?
You may find helpful advice there.

Hi Malcolm, and welcome to the forum

I've had a quick look at your site, and at first glance I thought your 'images' folder was missing from within your weather folder, however I can see there are one or two files in there, although the graphs and moon phase are missing so something is wrong.

Can you send a screen shot of your Internet config page (Configuration, Internet, Sites/Options)

I've just been putting together a Wiki article which you might want to cast your eye over too

Hi Guys and thanks for the warm welcome.

Here (hopefully) are the screen captures for the settings and how I've uploaded to my FTP.

Your 'directory' is wrong in the settings

it will either be 'weather' or 'MC001V61/weather'

Although looking at your folder structure there is also an HTML folder which is often where website files would go on your host. What is within the HTML folder?

Did you get an email from your host explaining your ftp server details?

Hi Dave,

The root folder is MC001V61 which is where all my main website files are. I've no idea what the other folders are, other than the bbq which holds some images

Here is the ftp log file if that is any help

http://micro-heli.co.uk/ftplog.txt

From your log file

Code: Select all

21:40:52:839 >|550 http://micro-heli.co.uk/weather: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. |
try changing the directory simply to weather

Your certainly do not/can not put in http://<servername> in the 'directory' field -- it already knows that based on the ftp server name and your username

Hi,

Have just changed to MC001V61/weather and performed an update - the start of the logfile states

Code: Select all

23:08:16:630 ! HighLevelAsync 0
23:08:16:630 ! HighLevelAsync done
23:08:16:632 02620110 TriggerDataSent 792
23:08:16:672 >|550 MC001V61/weather: The system cannot find the path specified. |
:(

Then tried just weather

Code: Select all

23:13:50:744 ! HighLevelAsync 0
23:13:50:924 02620110 TriggerDataSent 544
23:13:50:964 >|220-Microsoft FTP Service|

23:13:51:195 >| Welcome to the KIXEL FTP Service.|

23:13:51:195 >| Your are connected to server: LOXLEY|

23:13:51:195 >|220 ########################################|

23:13:51:236 ! HighLevelAsync 0
23:13:51:236 02620110 TriggerDataSent 544
23:13:51:277 >|230 User MC001V61 logged in.|

23:13:51:277 ! HighLevelAsync 0
23:13:51:277 ! HighLevelAsync done
23:13:51:278 02620110 TriggerDataSent 544
23:13:51:318 >|250 CWD command successful.|

23:13:52:278 02620110 TriggerDataSent 544
23:13:52:319 >|200 Type set to A.|

23:13:53:278 ! HighLevelAsync 0
23:13:53:279 02620110 TriggerDataSent 544
23:13:53:320 >|200 PORT command successful.|
Refreshing the web page shows the correct "last updated" stats -

I've also changed the realtime polling to 2 seconds (for testing) and pleased to say the gauges are also working :) :)

Thanks for the assistance

Malc

Excellent

You will have some tidying up to do of your site, as some of the files have ended up in the root folder rather than 'weather' when you had the problems.

Hiya,

Just as an FYI for other new users who may read this thread. When I initially configured my Windows 2003 server for FTP uploads I was only getting the HTML files and no graphics displayed. Upon investigation the images were actually being uploaded but to the root weather directory as opposed to the weather/images folder.

It turned out that the FTP account I setup had READ/WRITE/MODIFY access rights to the folder but was unable to CREATE the images subfolder. It took me a couple of hours to find this obvious mistake! :?

Chat soon.

Unfortunately (partly because of the way the ftp component works and partly because of the way I use it) the ftp thread just carries on regardless. I needed to rewrite the whole thing to be able to get at the error responses but never got around it, and now I probably won't at all (in C1).

Guys,

Is it just the gauges that get updated automatically ?

I've noticed that on the "now" page I have to refresh the page in order for the info to be updated. If it is only the gauges that get updates (as would appear by the clock changing) then is there a way to update the info on the main page ?

Hi Malcolm

You are correct in that only the gauges pages (and of that only the wind speed and direction) are updated automatically. In years gone by web pages did not auto refresh, but over the years tools have bee developed to perform this -- the two dials on the gauges page using 'flash' technology.

The easiest thing to do would be to modify your web pages and add

Code: Select all

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="300">
into the <HEAD> section of your pages. The 300 seconds equals 5 minutes.

Of course, one would question if someone would sit on one page for 5 minutes. (5 mins is what your station is setup to update at the moment according to your website)

The best way to update pages is to get into understanding JavaScript/AJAX to build dynamically updating pages.

The 'realtime' element of Cumulus works really well with the CumulusRealtime tool Steve has written so that might be something to look at -- http://sandaysoft.com/downloads. Example here http://www.sanday.org.uk/weather/CumulusRealtime.html
