Problems with brand new HP2551

Hi,

This message is partly a warning and partly an inquiry if anyone else has experienced similar issues.

I received a new HP2551 on tuesday, and straight out from the box the console would stop responding to any buttons after running for 10 minutes. When this happened, the date on console display jumped to 14th Jan 2081 and the clock time was overwritten with some text. This happened even after factory reset without doing any configuration at all. I upgraded the console firmware to ver 1.8.1, and the symptom remained the same. I also updated the wifi firmware easyweather pro to firmware 5.0.7 that was offered by ws view plus.

I contacted ecowitt support, and they quickly confirmed that they can reproduce the issue, and sent me a firmware file version 1.8.2 that should fix the problem. Now the console does not stop responding anymore, and date does not jump to year 2081 anymore.

However now after configuring the station properly and installing the sensors outdoor, I noticed a new problem. The console clock runs way too fast, even when connected to internet and synced from time.nist.gov. In less than 24 hours it has advanced about 16 minutes to the future. Could this be a firmware issue too, or maybe related to the hardware? I have contacted ecowitt support again, but have not yet received an answer.

If you have a properly running console with older firmware, I suggest not to upgrade to 1.8.x until this gets some clarification.

I'm running Pro 1.8.0 on my HP2551 - no issues here so any problems may be due to 1.8.1 onwards

Today afternoon ecowitt support sent me yet another new firmware hoping to resolve issues with changes regarding clock handling on hardware. Unfortunately that caused my console to fail totally and being unable to boot or revert to old firmware. I guess the hardware was somehow faulty at the first place. The console is black, model HP2551AE 868Mhz variant.

then, if you purchased it at Ecowitt, ask them for exchange after the complete failure.
If you purchased it from some other reseller, contact them for replacement.
It's very rare that a HP2551 console turns out being faulty ...
But there's a first time to everything

Mine was/is running perfectly on device firmware 1.7.9, 1.8.0, 1.8.1

Yes, of course. They considered replacing the console even before offering me the firmware 1.8.2, but tried to fix problem with updates first. Unfortunately the weekend has delayed their responses of course.

I purchased it by selecting ”buy from other store” from ecowitt.com, and it was ”sold by ecowitt eu and fulfilled by amazon.de”, so let’s see how the process goes. :? I’m a bit sceptic about the speed of the process if the replacement happens to come from China, so I ordered now a GW1100 also just in case as a secondary option to get things running. Too bad I didn’t order it in the first place with the Hp2551 since I really considered to add it anyway to be a cheap addition for testing and redundancy.

They are sending me a new console as warranty replacement. Unfortunately they do not have just consoles on stock with amazon.de so it will come from China. They also tracked the failure reason quite likely to be a clock crystal that has failed or is not soldered properly. I’ll investigate that later, if it would be repairable.

This also concludes, that my problem was not a firmware issue and anyone with properly working console is safe to install v1.8.1.
