Thinking of Removing Twitter Support from CMX

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Thinking of Removing Twitter Support from CMX

Post by mcrossley »

The Twitter support in CMX is now ancient and because of the changes to Twitter authentication since this code was written it can only be used a very few people who transitioned from Cumulus 1. (Can they even still use it?)

As the library it uses and some dependencies are now getting flagged as deprecated and no longer supported, I propose to remove all Twitter support from CMX in the near future.

As it is now, Twitter can still be used by employing a third party app and Twitter text file.

Over to you for your thoughts....

The major problem is the tweet rate limitation that is shared between all users of MX. So if only a few people use it then it will work okay. But that is impossible to do, so rip it out :)

Twitter in my Cumulus 1 hasn't worked for years. Nor has it worked with CumulusMX.

I have gone with using Weathercloud which is one of the third-party services in CumulusMX and this works 100% https://twitter.com/KomokaWeather
So agree, removing Twitter from the CumulusMX settings as there is an alternative.

Enjoy,
Paul

Fine with me.
In general I see the hourly weather reports on twitter as timeline pollution so i am not for it anyway.

Twitter? what is that?
Call me an old luddite but I have never used it nor wished to.
For me it is surplus to requirements and should be binned.

Is there anybody who does use it and can't do without may be a better question ;)

Well, I did hope those people (if there are any) would chip in ;)

Given the ancient code it uses, it's history unless I can be persuaded otherwise.

I used it initially but when the authentication issues started happening I started doing mine manually triggered off a created tweet.txt file from a python script I cobbled together to make work. One of the posts in here has instructions on how to do that (mainly for Linux/Pi based setups; I would imagine since it's Python it *should* work on a Windows implementation). It's pretty basic and has the instructions on how to get it set up if you are interested in doing it.

I guess the third-party sites like weathercloud will no longer publish weather data to Twitter from the 9th of February, since the free API access will stop?!

Better off shutting down Twitter imo.

I agree there's no point in fixing what will not work soon anyway if this charging for the API comes to fruition. Ken True has already said he will retire his scripts if the free API goes away.
