Moving MX to a different folder/Drive

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Moving MX to a different folder/Drive

Post by Paul C »

HI

During my initial installation of Cumulus MX I downloaded the files to my desktop, from there I ran the program and installed everything. It works fine with no issues but I realise its not really the best place for it to sit and as a result I cant get CumulusUtils to work alongside with it.

To now move to my "C" Drive, is it a case of moving all the files and folder to "C" or is there other things I need to do ?

I know for example my dayfile.txt upload will have to be changed as it will be on the wrong path, but what about the main program itself

YES I was fairly stupid at the start, so go easy on me :bash:

Thank you

In my opinion you should:
  1. Make an inventory of where you used absolute paths
  2. Stop CumulusMX
  3. Move the whole CumulusMX directory - and all that's in it including subdirectories - to the new destination (probably c:\)
  4. Edit Cumulus.ini to change possible absolute paths (does that include your dayfile upload or do you do that externally?)
  5. Start CumulusMX and check it runs correctly.
  6. Check the logfile for errors.
As CumulusMX uses it files through the relative paths it will run from any place where you have it installed.
It is only in some settings (like e.g. extra webfiles) where you - accidently - may have used absolute paths referring to CumulusMX. In that case you may need to change to the new path. All other things should work after moving the directory. If any problem, post the logfile.

If anybody sees an error, please post correction.

Oh and wrt making errors: we've all been there so it does not matter. Willing to learn and go forward is more important.

Ah yes Paul, but apparently you moved it to Program Files.
It is advised NOT to do so, I am not sure why but apparently it has to do with privileges.

My advise was to move the CumulusMX directory to c:\, leading to the path C:\CumulusMX where everything is installed.
Maybe a second attempt?

It is not a good idea to move CumulusMX to the root of the C: drive in Windows as other files like boot files, and system files will get mixed up with the installation and could get deleted inadvertently when messing with the installation causing problems with boot of the PC.

I would create a Directory in the root of C: (i.e. CumululsMx e.g. C:/CumulusMX ) and copy all the files there.

Isn't that what Hans said in his last reply?

It is advised NOT to do so, I am not sure why
and the replies from the two administrators that followed that, there is specific to Microsoft Windows MX guidance in the Wiki that covers this very point.

Don't assume the rest of the Wiki is kept up to date, but I have made the answer to HansR's implied question clearer at the above link, although I am only aware of two past Forum topics about this for MX; it got discussed a few months ago in viewtopic.php?p=160149&hilit=AppData#p160149 and discussed a couple of years ago at viewtopic.php?p=147389&hilit=AppData#p147389.

Ok Paul, that's good. We'll continue in the other thread on how to start CUtils I suppose?
