End of year problem

Post by Gordon-Loomberah »

I have the software set up to end the day at 9am, and yesterday morning should have been the end of the year for rainfall, but this morning at 8:25am I see that I've had -698.2mm today, -571.0mm for the month and -697.2mm since midnight.
The rain graph shows its big plunge into the negative at midnight. Rainfall in Cumulus is showing as 1.2mm, the Davis VP2 console shows 2.0mm. The rain only started a bit before 7am, so I dont know whats going on here.
I cant find anything obvious in the menus that needs to be done at EOY, any suggestions?

Ok, now its after 9am I have yesterday as -698.2, and -697.6 since 00:00.
Looking at extremes for 2009, it says total rainfall for the year is 1.4mm, but the wettest day was 27/12 with 62mm.
December extremes shows -571.0mm for the month.

no wonder its been dry...

thanks, Gordon

End of year "reset precip to 0" issue. Randomly clicking through sites on the Cumulus User Map, this appears to be happening at a quite a few Cumulus websites, including Sandaysoft's. Interesting that it is not occurring at all Cumulus websites however (build specific perhaps?).

Happy New Year!

Hi Gordon, I have the same problem, -1810mm for the day.

Mine was easy to fix as we have had no rain, so I edited my Jan10.txt file from my rollover time, and then edited the today.ini file to start=0 and all is now correct.

I am glad I checked as it would have been a real pain if I would have had to edit several days/weeks of notepad records.

Strangely (to me ) even after getting C1 correct, when I start C2 I still get rain of -1918mm for the year but if I go into the edit database the timestamps stop at 5.30am, 1/1/10 so thats prior to the roll-over so I suppose I have to wait till tomorrow to edit that. Not sure why timestamp entries do not appear to the present time?

Weatherlink has rolled over and reset everything as it should.

I see Cumulus seems to have been around since 2007, so I assume this would have been addressed previously?

Hi Peter, I also went and edited the necessary files this morning to sort it out, before it got out of hand.

Feels like we had -4.62in this past year... Actually we were -7+ inches under normal this year.

Just in case anyone is not sure what to do...

Look in the data directory where your cumulus is installed in.

2 files will need to be modified.

FIRST, shutdown Cumulus normally

Jan10log.txt

Remove the negative rain for the year. For example, mine was -4.62, just changed to 0.00

today.ini

Change the start= to 0.00 in the [rain] Section like

Code: Select all

[Rain]
High=0
HTime=00:00
Start=0
Yesterday=0
After you have completed that, you can restart Cumulus and it should show 0.00 (assuming you are not having rain during the beginning of the new year. If that is the case, you should be able to see how much rain you got and adjust as needed.

Kevin,

Thanks for your helpful post. My Jan10log.txt was okay as it didn't rain yesterday but I had a negative rain entry in my dayfile.txt for 31/12/09 of -23.29".

I edited that to 0.00 and Cumulus is now okay. I've had to replace my C2 database with an empty one and rebuild it to correct the problem in that version.

Later: There is still a problem with Today's Rain in C2 but I've posted a message about that in the C2 section.

Steve, is there a parameter somewhere that tells Cumulus when the rain season starts and when the rain season ends?

On the Vantage Pro2, there is a setup command for the beginning of the rain season - I have set that value to October 1st.

The reason I am asking is that this morning, I decided to clear up Cumulus completely and start anew. After starting Cumulus, the information saved into the Vantage Pro2 console (datalogger) were downloaded by/to Cumulus.

Once the download was completed, Cumulus displayed the yearly value of 877.0 mm for 'Today', 'Yesterday', 'This month' and 'This year'!

What I eventually did was to delete the rain value from the Vantage Pro2 console (cleared the yearly rain variable), edited the Cumulus 'Jan10log.txt' file and restarted Cumulus - no entry had been added to the 'today.ini' file. I also deleted the 'alltime.rec' file.

What other options did I have, if any?

Seems to be a problem only with Davis systems; EasyWeather/FineOffset WH systems seem to be OK; at least mine is, and can't see any other error reports from WH users.

Perhaps Steve will be along soon with some ideas. :)

For me the fix was easy.

Just opened the "today" file in the ../Cumulus/data directory (after stopping Cumulus)

Under the [Rain] section I just changed the value of Start=xxxx (xxxx is whatever end of the day running rain total you have) to Start=0

"Fixed" example follows:
[Rain]
High=0
HTime=00:00
Start=0
Yesterday=0.109999999403954

Cumulus just needed to reset the Start value to 0 on Jan 1st (which it did not do) instead of carrying the running total over from the last day of December.

Some time during the last year I seem to have changed something in the code which results in a problem with rainfall at the year rollover for Davis systems. The 'total counter' that I use for Davis systems is the annual total, which of course reset at midnight last night. I did suspect that there would be a slight discrepancy for people like myself who use an 0900 rollover, but clearly the unxpected negative rainfall problem has hit all VP2 users. I can only apologise for this, and I'll see if I can work out why it happened to fix it for next year.

Have a slight problem here.
Using V1.8.9 Build 890
My rainfall from last year carried over to this year. It says -55.90.
Here is the first 2 lines for the Jan log.

01/01/10,00:00,63.3,90,60.3,0.2,2.0,205,0.00,0.00,30.058,55.90,77.7,55,2.0,63.3,63.3
01/01/10,00:10,63.5,89,60.2,0.9,3.0,206,0.00,0.00,30.056,0.00,77.7,55,1.0,63.5,63.5

As you can see at the .10 update the rainfall goes back to zero but it still says -55.90 on the screen. How do I fix this.
Thanks.
