New Firmware HP2551 and like stations

Post by water01 »

In case anybody has not noticed there is a new firmware (HP2550&HP2560_V1.7.8) with lots of fixes and enhancements available at https://www.ecowitt.com/shop/manualDownload
HP2550/2560 V1.7.8 Upgrades are available.
contents:
1. Italian, Spanish, Dutch language added.
2. Icon for weather services of WC, WOW, and ecowitt added when these services are enabled.
3. New WS90 sensor supported.
4. Max/Min font color changed.
5. Optimized sensor ID page for better logic.
6. Haptic rain data will be stored in flash upon priority selection.
7. Haptic rain gain can be set for different rain intensities.
8. German translation updated for a better layout.
9. Tighter new sensor validation check when new sensor type is found. This is helpful in avoiding wrong sensor data being received.
10. If haptic and tip spoon type rain sensors are both present, the user can select which data should be used on the "more" page.
11. Fixed a bug for the pm2.5 sensor not locked for its sensor ID.
12. Special character supported at the keyboard layout.
After download, unzip the file, rename the file to user.bin and copy the file on an SD card ( not over 32G size), insert it into the console, the update will start automatically.

The criteria for the microSD card are: FAT32 formatted and type SDHC (which has a max size of 32GB). A SDXC card, even 32 GB, will be problematic.
For the HP2551 the file inside the Zip file is usually already user.bin.
Another important criterion is that user.bin must be copied into the root directory of the card's file system.
For more detailed information regarding FineOffset (clone) hardware, including the latest firmware, look up https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 on a regular basis.
There is a changelog in the thread.

There has been another firmware update for these units.

May just be me - but when I installed it, it wiped my wifi settings and I had to re-enter them. It also changed all my measurement units from imperial to metric!

That must have been some bad personal karma ;) - for me the V.1.8.0 installed without any issues leaving my WiFi settings untouched.
Details on the new device firmware version at https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 firmware section.

At the risk of sounding thick, where do you download this firmware from? The only link I could find (https://help.ambientweather.net/help/am ... ad-center/) times out in both Firefox, Edge and Chrome.

https://osswww.ecowitt.net/uploads/2022 ... 220418.zip
Process also described at https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0
It should also work with an Ambient (WS-2000/5000) console - some people in the wxforum did that successfully.

my mother used to say: "if it had been a wolf, he would have devoured you" 8-)

from the firmware section of that thread:

"console firmware update for the HP2551 and HP350x consoles is done via microSDcard. Download from Ecowitt.com or ambientweather.net [https://help.ambientweather.net/help/am ... ad-center/]. Copy the file user.bin (HP2551 or clone) or firmware.bin + picture.bin (HP350x) or factory.bin (WS-2000/WS-5000 console) to the FAT32 formatted SD card's ( :!: SDHC type only max 32 GB :!:) root directory on a PC and insert it into the console. HP350x will need a power-cycle [switch off/on].

The microSD card can only be properly inserted in one direction. Looking at the console display, the contacts of the microSD card have to go in first and have to be visible for you, the printed side of of the microSD card will have to show away from you.

The Ambient firmware update file may come with different names when you download it (factory_1.bin, user.bin, user.zip (needs to be unpacked first), user_1_6_3.bin etc.).
If the name is not factory.bin or user.bin, it needs to be renamed to user.bin resp. factory.bin . Updates from newer firmware version work with both names for Ambient consoles.
(difference: user.bin will be deleted automatically after the update, factory.bin needs to be deleted manually)."

Perhaps I've been eaten by the wolf - that link times out for me. I went onto ecowitt.com and eventually found the firmware for my console - HP2551AE - but the last version was Firmware Update - V1.7.4 07/02/2021, which I think I've already installed (not long after I got the kit in December). It refers to HP2550&HP2560_V1.7.6 12/26/2021, but not version 1.8. So I'm a bit confused about what I should be doing. Pass auf, da ist noch ein Wolf

try this one then
it's from the link I earlier suggested
https://osswww.ecowitt.net/uploads/2022 ... 220418.zip
extract it into the root directory of your (FAT32 formatted and SDHC type) microSD,
insert it in the proper direction (see text above) and the process should start automatically.
And beware of wolves jumping from the console display. :ugeek:

It seems that they discovered quite a many improvements regarding timekeeping, clock crystals and system stability while debugging root causes for my console failure. I must say that I’m very impressed with their support and efforts to improve the product.

I wonder if this maybe the cause of this, my HP2551 seems to reading data in the future!!

Well at least on my console the clock tends to run ahead slightly, about one minute off before the timesync corrects it once in 24h (fw 1.8.1). So I think that is a natural explanation for your picture. Unfortunately my only CMX is currently configured to use the GW1100 that I also have, so I can’t confirm the hypothesis.
