Wind Run

Is there a problem with the wind run calculation in Build 3169 as I am averaging currently 11MPH and gusts of 37MPH in Eunice and the wind run should be ticking along but it is fairly static and currently reads on only 38.8 miles.

Now at an average of 11MPH and 9.30 hrs that surely should be at least 103 miles? Or am I misunderstanding wind run?

Hi David,

I'm not having any issues. I did a dump of yesterday's data and totalled the wind speed at 5 minute intervals. Came to 1560 over 288 readings which gives an average for the day of 5.42 km/h. The webtag shows 5.4 km/h and wind run shows 130.2 km which equals 5.4 km/h. Tested today's data using the same method and everything also agrees.

Regards,
Trevor

All seems ok here. Currently at 190 miles.

Perhaps it has to do with the changes that Mark did to the Ecowitt wind calculations in Build 3162?

I don't think that. My Ecowitt windrun is OK

The wind run is incremented once a minute using the current average wind speed. The calculation is independent of the station type.

So, if the average wind speed is showing the value you expect, then the run value should also be correct.

I'm having an issue as well. Not picking up wind speed and wind run. It's showing up on the Gauges but not the data. It is showing up with the Ecowitt site...

Please switch on data and debug logging in the Program Options, let CMX continue to run for 10 minutes, then re-post the MXdiags file. Thanks

Thanks Mark. Not to HiJack the thread but turned on the data and debugging and let it run 10 minutes+.. I attached my diags. Maybe it'll help out the original poster water01 too.

I cannot see a reason why the average speed isn't being recorded. Indeed if the gauge is showing it, then it should be shown elsewhere as they use the same variable.

That does not look like the standard CMX dashboard interface though. Are you using another version of it? Could you revert to the standard interface and see what that shows?

However your data does reveal something though, the wind speeds being sent do not appear to match what I would expect given the data I have seen from GW-1000/GW-1100 devices.
It appears Ecowitt may implement the local Ecowitt protocol differently on different devices - and they do not document it anywhere anyway!

Your device is sending wildly different readings for the gust with every packet. The GW-xxxx seem to send a two minute gust value and last instantaneous reading for the speed, which means you can catch every max gust value fairly easily. With yours varying for every packet, it may be missing gusts between packets - who knows there is no documentation nor it appears any standardisation apparently. I'm sort of reaching the stage with the Ecowitt protocol that if it sort of works, then great.

If you can, you are *always* better off using the GW1000 station type, that protocol is documented and understood, and MX can control the update rate.

At the bottom it says Cumulus MX 3.15.0 b3169.

Is there another version? if so can you point me to it? It used to work until I upgraded to 3169.

Should I enable any of these settings? Whats odd is that it is picking up the wind on the gauges, just not the data.

Sorry, you had mashed up bits if different screens in your post - I though it looked like a custom dashboard!

So should I choose that in the Config wizard and see if it works? Right now I have it set to HTTP Upload Ecowitt

Thanks

Just opened version 3159 and it does read wind speed. I went through some options but couldnt find any differences.
So it's definitely with the new version that its not picking up the wind speed. Any thoughts or suggestions for me? Thanks Mark. Excellent work with 3169 and the "catching" up after closing!

I had to untick Station Settings -> Common Options -> "Use wind speed for average calculation"
