update Cumulus v3.9.7 (3107) to thee latest Cumulus MX release 3.15.0 (build 3169).

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

update Cumulus v3.9.7 (3107) to thee latest Cumulus MX release 3.15.0 (build 3169).

Post by geoffw »

Hi Folks,
Windows 11 PC
Simple Question: I want to update Cumulus v3.9.7 (3107) to thee latest Cumulus MX release 3.15.0 (build 3169). Any issues I need to be aware of? Or can I just back backup my CumulusMX folder and copy Build 3169 into my CumlulusMX Folder and restart?

That is quite and upgrade, I wouldn't leave it that long in future.

Right where to start. You need to read this listing for 3115 as there were major changes in the default web site and how it is updated viewtopic.php?p=151428#p151428

I then suggest you read either through the updates.txt or through the release posts one by one as there has been quite a few major changes to do with database fields and other areas.

It might be easier to take it steady and upgrade through the major releases one by one (they are all available here https://github.com/cumulusmx/CumulusMX/releases), but whatever you do backup your files and install directory before each upgrade so you have a means of getting back to a stable release in case you miss something.

Slow and steady and read the the notes on the upgrade is the best way then you will not miss anything and keep up to date in the future!! :D :D :D

Just a short follow-up.

I think I would like to do a "clean" installation only including my data from May 2009 when I started usining Cumulus 1.

As for the website, I think I prefer a completely fresh start, so that revision can wait.

So will this work:
Stop Cumulus
Rename the current CumulusMX Folder
Install Build 3169
Copy into 3169 the Data folder from my current renamed version
Copy into 3169 cumulus.ini

Hi,
b3107 to 3169, seems like a long time ago but only a year ;)
Yes I think that should work. Also copy in the Reports folder if you have that.

When CMX is started use the new Settings Config Wizard just to go through the main settings just in case you detect something... Then also suggest you go through the Program, Station and Internet settings (including the expanding items) just to make sure you have it how you want.

Also, I think it was after b3107 that Mark created the CreateMissing utility which you can run to add some of the added elements in dayfile.txt

Enjoy,
Paul

Mark has removed and added many settings in the last year, consequently release 3.15.0 may not understand a release 3.9.7 configuration file.
To convert your old configuration file:
1) treat PaulMy's suggestions as mandatory, to add required new settings of latest release to your configuration file.
2) follow Mark's advice here to remove redundant settings within new release, as the wizard Paul mentions probably won't do that step.

If (instead of what you propose) you decided to follow Water01's approach, that is actually recommended in advice here. In your case it requires you to install 3.12.0 as an essential in-between step (this worked in viewtopic.php?p=160498#p160498), as that single build renames your existing "cumulus.ini" and creates a new one. The advantage of installing that intermediate release is that redundant settings are removed, and the new settings are added by a process written specifically by developer to do that file conversion. Water01's advice would require you to read about the further changes to settings at both 3.13.0 and 3.14.0 although those were less major. At your final release installation, the default settings may be wrong for you, so you may need to check them using the wizard/settings pages as per PaulMy's suggestions.
