It will be only the northern part of the Netherlands where the storm will rage and where storm surge levels will be reached. Those barriers will be closed.
Not an abnormal situation, it would be worse - also for East England and London - with NW to NE wind with the water being pushed into the narrow Channel, the 1953 situation. There are already flood warnings for areas within 5 miles of the measuring stations ruling the Thames Barrier.
This game between wind and water is one of my meteo motivations. Tension and sensation.
[EDIT 18/2 9h00:] Orange warning now for most of the Netherlands.

Storm? What storm? 31mph is highest here so far and pressure has just bottomed out at 979.9hPa. 17hPa higher than my lowest pressure.

Maybe once the centre moves east the winds will increase.
    Cheers,
    Ray, Cheshire.

Well in sunny sheltered Gorey Jersey the max gust was 36 mph @11:04, currently decreasing and the lowest pressure was 1001.7 @07:00 currently rising. It also missed us then.

Yes, that's when you will get the increase - 57 mph here which is lower than anticipated, but there's an hour or so left for that to change.

Absolute pressure values are irrelevant TBH - it's the gradient of pressure around the low that gives the strong winds. In the case of this storm and the core of strong winds crossing W-E over central parts, it's the rate at which pressure is rising to the rear of the centre that is the generation mechanism for the strong winds - and that rate of pressure rise is solely down to the strength and orientation of the jet stream miles above our heads.

Freddie, I’m well aware that absolute pressure is no indication of wind strength but given the Met Office forecast a weather bomb I was expecting it to be lower.

Pressure was falling extremely rapidly for a while this morning but is now rising rapidly. Winds have picked up in the last 30 mins. I expect 40mph to be broken. Maybe the path of the low is not quite that predicted 24 hours ago.
    Cheers,
    Ray, Cheshire.

It split into two lows - perhaps you were between the two centres? Secondary centre formed over Northern Ireland in the small hours and is now the dominant centre at 970 hPa off the coast of E Scotland. The main centre was over SW Ireland at 0600 (974 hPa), and moved ENE, moving along the Cheshire/Shropshire border late morning, and is now approaching Hull, central pressure about the same as at 0600. My pressure bottomed out at 976.7 hPa, similar values at Harwarden and Leek. Perhaps your baro is reading a bit high?

It was a weather bomb, BTW, central pressure dropped more than 30 hPa in 24 hours.

Splitting may have reduced the impact up here but winds are now what I expected several hours ago. Pressure was 1003 at midnight and fell to 976 at 11:32 so 27hPa in 11.5hrs. Over twice a bomb!

Pressure matches that at Manchester airport so no worries there. 52mph recorded so near peak storm.

2 miles inland from south coast here, but very sheltered location and seldom record gusts over 30mph. I got 51mph at 12:24, pressure went from 1008.1 at 20:40 last night to 988.5 at 11:00 this morning. It’s been pretty bad, but thankfully everything seems OK. Cannot imagine what 90mph gusts must be like!!! Going to be a very windy weekend right through to Monday afternoon by the looks of it.

The increase in winds were forecast earlier in the week to be mid morning in your area, and it did slip by 3-4 hours - especially over the past 3/4 model runs.

The rise has been equally dramatic - 15 hPa in 3 hours here at one point!

Manchester a/p recorded 976 hPa between 11:20 and 11:50 so perhaps yours is a tad high?

Which matches my 976.2 at 11:32. Remember they only report to the nearest millibar.
