Which is why Cumulus was showing 4.5 for 'latest', as per the FAQ entry. So I don't really understand what you think the problem is?

Not really a problem - it's just that the needle reads "the highest wind in the last 10 minutes" rather than the latest transmission from the anemometer.

No, it doesn't! The red sector shows the highest wind (gust) in the last 10 minutes. The needle shows the 'gust' from the station, shown as 'latest' in Cumulus, because that's the latest transmission from the station, as proven by the fact that you say it shows as 'gust' on the console. So the needle shows a snapshot of the wind speed at some point in the last 48 seconds (exact definition know only to Fine Offset).

Perhaps an alternative approach to this discussion would be for you to say exactly what it is that you want the needle to show, given that you don't seem to want it to show the latest short-term wind speed.

I do find the description "latest" very confusing.
If the station delivers two values, then one of them should be named windspeed and the other one the gust.

Gust seems to be the peak into the measured time range and speed the average into the same period.
But to name this shortest possible 48 second measurement average is also confusing.
I think it should better namend just windspeed, because it still is the windspeed that the sensor has
detected and average is suggesting it would be a much greater period.

I think what davejj wanted to say was that cumulus showed a needle which was not at zero alltough
the weaterstation shows zero and also the anemometer was standing still.
(Like what happend to me too...)

That may be true for the type of station you are using, but not for others. And some stations only supply one value. I've tried to make the labels make sense in all cases; it's not easy.

Incidentally - your comment about averages: speeds measured by this type of anemometer are always averages, it's just a question of the period over which they measure the average. A 48-second average is still an average, just like a 10-minute average. Even the 3-second value from a Davis station is an average.
