WH1081 Wind Vane query

Firstly thank you so much for a 'fantastico' piece of software! I had a Fine Offset WH1081 as a Christmas present and amazingly even through three brick walls it is giving me data - great.

The only problem seems to be with the wind vane. Given that we have had a strong east wind for about the last 48 hrs, my readings seem all to the contrary. You couyld take a look if you wish at:

http://www.meteosat.talktalk.net/Porthcawl/

It may be down to the proximity of the house - about 12 feet away, and the eddies and swirls it can produce, but just to double check - having aligned the 'N' and 'S' markers as correctly as I can see, if, e.g. the wind was from the due south, should the round paddle bit be at the 'S' mark and the pointy bit at the 'N' or would it be the other way around? (Sorry for the technical exxplanation!). I'll tape the vane temporarily and take a reading then. I am just wondering if I have a duff unit. I also wonder if it would be possible to damp the unit a tad.

Many thanks to all,

Cheers

James

The almost random nature of the wind vane is a common problem with these stations; if you look through the forum you will see some attempts at improving it.

The wind vane points into the wind i.e. if the wind is southerly, the pointy bit is south and the round bit is north.

Ok ...........As Steve just said, the "Pointy bit" faces INTO the wind so if the wind is coming FROM the SOUTH it point TO THE SOUTH ( The "Paddle" would be due north)

Just a thought you have aligned the station correctly ??? there are N,S,E & W markers on the "Tab" that the "Vane" sits on You need the station to be aligned with the "N" to TRUE NORTH, NOT magnetic North...So if you use a compass you'll have to calculate TRUE NORTH

Here a link to a site thats very easy to use to calculate it for you

Many thanks to Steve and all.

I freely admit I jumped in a bit quick with the query before looking at other posts - apologies for that.

When daylight returns I'll do a check based on the pointy bit pointing into the wind!

I have one other query - but I'll start a new thread so not to be more confusing than I already am!

Cheers
