Ecowitt WS80 heater

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Ecowitt WS80 heater

Post by KarlS »

I'm wondering if the built-in heater for the WS80 ultrasonic wind speed meter effects the temperature sensor that is located only inches below in the same housing. If so, I might have to add a WH32 outdoor temperature sensor (that in this case luckily overrides the WH80).

I think that is a possibility and the wh32 in that case ( you're in cold canada if i remember correctly) might be usefull separately on a 1.5m height.
I have the same sitution (ws80) but not so cold.

So now I can confirm that the heater for the WS80 definitivly messes up the temperature measurements. Look at the graph:

Image4.jpg

At 05:05 this morning I switched on the heater because the windspeed had flatlined for a while. Immediately the measured temperature rose quite steeply. When I switched off the heater an hour later the measured temperature dropped equally fast. I'm now waiting for the delivery of the WH32 (but with the catastrophic flooding in Southern BC at the moment this could take a while).

Well, the argument for the wh32 is quite clear ;)
But with a distance of more than the power supply cable, how do we do that? Solar/battery? And just when you need it the sun disappears :groan:

Wind powered! No wind = no power, but nothing to measure anyway!

A WH32 can withstand -10°C even on Alkaline batteries for a longer period - no problem.
The WS80 runs on its batteries if its supercapacitor has no charge anymore due to missing sunlight ...
(and the heater with the raised enclosure temperature will increase battery life).

If you want to tinker, connect a cable to the WS80 battery compartment which provides the power supply
from a power source of your choice - just with the proper voltage/amperage.
Ecowitt has such a solution (remote battery supply) for its WH65/WS69 and especially its WN67 arrays
the latter not having an inbuilt solar panel - unfortunately not (yet ?) for the WS80.
