Not getting data from VP2 with MX

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Not getting data from VP2 with MX

Post by inmyrvm »

I recently got a new Windows PC and I've been trying to get MX running and connected to my VP2 datalogger. I copied over my previous settings per the Moving Cumulus wiki. And when I run MX it shows it's connecting and downloading data, but all I'm getting is zeros on the data page. I have WeatherLink installed (for the drivers) but not running. Can someone suggest a course of action for troubleshooting? I've attached a screen shot of what I get after starting MX.

Thanks!

Looks like it's connecting okay and attempting to download archive data. What we really need to see is the contents of the log files in the MXdiags folder of your installation. Zip those up and attach to a reply to this topic.

I've attached the MXdiags files. Looks like it's an issue with the date format not matching.

Appreciate the help!

Mike

edit: added dayfile.txt for reference

It looks like your computer date format changed.
From 20 Oct 2020 to 16 Sept 2021 it was using a "/" as the date separator.
Then from 28 Sept to 7 Oct it was using a "-" as the date separator.

On the 7th it looks like you fixed this as there is a second entry for that day using the "/" again. Though the last log file shows that the system is still set to use a "-"?

Code: Select all

2021-10-07 17:21:08.032 Date separator=[-] Time separator=[:]
It looks like the monthly log files have the same problem.

You will need to ensure the system stays using a "/" if that is what you want to use, and edit all the data files to change those entries using a "-" to "/". That will fix your start-up errors reading the data files.

As for the VP2, it is not responding at all to the "wake up" command - a newline.

Questions:
1. Are you *sure* that the Davis station is still connected to COM2?
2. Do you have a genuine Davis logger or a clone?
3. If a Davis logger is it serial or USB?
4. If it is Davis USB have you re-installed the Silicon Labs CP210x USB driver on your new PC?

Once you get the date format sorted and your VP2 communicating, then I suggest your restore your data files back to the original copies and let CMX catch-up from the logger. You will probably have a gap given the length of time, but at least it will extract what data it can.

Thanks for the tips. I changed the newer entries in dayfile.txt that had the newer format so they now match the older ones. I didn't see any bad entries in the monthly file so maybe I wasn't looking in the right file. Which one(s) were you referring to?

I'm using a genuine USB Davis datalogger for sure. Not sure what com port it's connected to (how can I check that). I did not reinstall the driver as I didn't want to mess anything up. Where can I download that and are there instructions?

The driver comes with the WeatherLink Windows application I believe? (I don't have a USB logger). I think the WL app will also find the correct COM port for you as well.

It looks like I've corrected the errors in dayfile.txt as I'm not seeing those errors anymore in the log. However, I'm still seeing messages about VP not being woken:

2021-10-09 16:03:58.837 WakeVP: Starting
2021-10-09 16:03:58.837 WakeVP: Sending wake-up newline (1/4)

2021-10-09 16:03:59.849 WakeVP: Sending wake-up newline (2/4)
2021-10-09 16:04:00.002 Minimum data set of pressure, temperature, and wind is not available and NoSensorCheck is not enabled. Skip processing
2021-10-09 16:04:00.094 Realtime[106]: End cycle
2021-10-09 16:04:00.857 WakeVP: Timed out waiting for response
2021-10-09 16:04:00.857 WakeVP: Sending wake-up newline (3/4)
2021-10-09 16:04:01.860 WakeVP: Timed out waiting for response
2021-10-09 16:04:01.860 WakeVP: Sending wake-up newline (4/4)
2021-10-09 16:04:02.861 WakeVP: Timed out waiting for response
2021-10-09 16:04:02.861 WakeVP: *** VP2 Not woken

What can I do to troubleshoot this? It's set to COM1 in MX but how can I be sure that's the correct port?

If you look in your Windows Device Manager - what ports does it show under Ports (COM & LPT) ?

COM1 is not correct, so try the next one. I have never used the Silicon Labs driver, but is that identified as a USB Serial Port?

As per a previous comment I made, I've always installed the CP210x drivers to avoid the WeatherLink install.

Once the drivers is installed, I connect the VP2, go to device manager & set the com port I find to Com3 & 19200 baud.
Before even attempting to run CMX, I try to connect with VPLive, as it gives me a simple way to confirm all is operational.

Com1 & 2 can be bad choices, as these ports are often present on some motherboards, even though they may not have an actual connection port available.
Just part of the chipsets function & often gets in the way.

Phil.

Ok, looks like I'm in business. COM3 was the correct port and it was listed in the Device Manager with the Silicon Labs label.

A couple additional questions if I may:

I have a web site that I have always uploaded my web files to (hosted by Godaddy). The log file shows that the json files are uploading properly, but all the .htm files in the web directory on my PC have not updated since I moved into the new house. Did I miss a setting somewhere? I checked my web site and verified it's still from Sep. 17. I attached the latest log file for reference.

Update: I should add that realtime.txt and realtimegauges.txt are not uploading either. I took a screenshot of my web directory listing showing the update times of the files and attached that as well.

but all the .htm files in the web directory on my PC have not updated
The recent versions of CumulusMX do no longer use the xxxT.htm files in the \web folder for processing and updating.
These are replaced by the one-time FTP of all the files and folders in the \webfiles folder which includes index.htm, etc.
I should add that realtime.txt and realtimegauges.txt are not uploading either.
The realtime.txt and realtimegauges.txt need to be ticked in settings for upload.

If you have not yet done so you may want to go through all the Settings to make sure you have it working as you want.

Enjoy,
Paul

Further to what Paul said, if you want to carry on using the old default web site, then all the xxxT.htm files will have to be added manually to the Web Extra Files - https://cumuluswiki.org/a/New_Default_W ... X_v3.10.2B

Thanks. I'm definitely on board with the new method and it was working fine for a 5-10 minutes, but I must be missing a step or two because I'm getting some errors, including an unhandled exception error file that I've posted in a new thread since it's not really related to the Davis issues.
