Ecowitt Lightning Sensor Config in CMX

I just got my Ecowitt Lightning Sensor set up. There are no storms around, but it appears to be communicating successfully with the GW1100 gateway and data (blank data) shows on my Ecowitt profile on the site as well as on the WS View app. I followed the correct steps in Settings -> Extra Sensors -> Use a HTTP Station for extra sensors -> Ecowitt.

The steps from the app say to:
In WS View configure the Custom Server to use:-
Protocol: Ecowitt
Server: CMX IP Address
Path: /station/ecowittextra
Port: 8998
Interval: 20

In my case, my server is local, IE on the same network as the Ecowitt. I've tried the server IP as well as the server hostname, but both ways it doesn't appear any data is showing in CMX.

Now, is there an issue with my setup? OR do I need to wait for a storm (we need rain so hopefully soon) and for a lightning strike to register?

Until you register a strike there is nothing to update, so the displayed values will remain at their defaults.

Makes sense! I knew as I was typing it had to be a dumb question

To revive this one, we finally have storms around. The Ecowitt dashboard shows 10 strikes, the last one very recently. However, CMX still shows nothing. So, does my config above "appear" right?

Did you use the WS View app to configure the Ecowitt device to upload to CMX? You use the Weather Services area and configure a customized upload.

Hi Guy, yes, but that is where the probable issue lies. As stated in my OP, I am not certain on what to enter since everything is local. I tried my actual server IP but that didn't work. I tried the hostname but no luck. I guess maybe I need to use my WAN IP, and then just open 8998 on the firewall? Again, I am not certain what is correct.

I presume you are looking in the Additional Sensors part of the Dashboard?

MIne shows

Lightning
Distance to last strike 10.6 miles
Time of last strike 29/09/2021 03:21:57
Number of strikes today 0

You should also see the data on www.ecowitt.net provided you have registered the GW1000 gateway on the site.

My CMX additional sensors page shows:

Lightning
Distance to last strike -1.0 miles
Time of last strike 1/1/0001 12:00:00 AM
Number of strikes today 0

But my Ecowitt shows activity (albeit a bunch of false positives, so guess I need to figure out what is causing that...)

So I use the IP address of the PC which hosts CMX and connects to my weather station. Its a static IP which makes this "easy".

Guy, without providing me your actual IP, are you using a private IP (like if your PC is at home and you're using a class C 192.168.x.x address) or is your PC elsewhere and you're using a public IP and port 8998 is forwarded?

It's a private IP - of the type 192.168.X.X. My weather station console is attached via USB to a mini-PC on which CMX runs. That PC is on my home network. CMX of course uses port 8998.

My GW settings look like this:

You definitely don't need to use your public IP nor open any ports if the GW and MX host are on the same LAN.

This is so maddening haha. Both of you have confirmed I have it set up correctly. My one last thought is that I have segmented out my network with different vlans. So I would guess that the server being isolated on its own vlan is the issue.

I also adjusted the dip switch settings so hopefully the false positives die down. Read up on it last night and looks like a number of people have the same issue.

If the GW is on a separate vlan to MX then you need a route between the two. Best to have them both on the same vlan.
