Extra sensor file

I am looking into the extra sensors facility of CMX. I did that some three years ago and now repeating it.
There is one thing which still makes me wonder at first glance: if I have only one extra sensor I immediately get a file with a huge record size (and now with the Ecowitt additions probably even larger). As I intend to keep files for history reason (like e.g. the monthly logs) keeping the extra sensors file claims huge extra space for potential not present sensors.
Is it possible to do this a bit more efficiently? E.g. store a file per sensor block (temperature, humidity etc...) and then only store the sensors present?
This avoids redundant useless storage - wasted - space
This is just an idea, there may be more solutions.
(Oh and I don't have extra sensors myself but I intend to facilitate it in CumulusUtils)
