Cumulus Support

Hi

I have been a user of Cumulus for many years, using it with my Oregon Scientific WMR200. The other day, the wind vane broke irreparably. I am looking for a source to replace the wind vane and/or a replacement product that would work with CumulusMX. I apologize if this is slightly off topic but I am desperate to find a replacement if it is available so that I do not have to buy a whole new weather stattion.

I have no special knowledge of this part, but if it is a plastic vane that is broken, you could probably get one 3D-printed? The size and shape should not be hyper-critcal.

Thanks for this idea. Where would I get a template to print from? I ave never done 3D printing. Thanks.

How "irreparably" ? Is the vertical shaft still accessible and/or functional? If so, it should be possible to fabricate (and attach with Epoxy glue) a new vane from sheet material, perhaps Acrylic, Aluminium or even recycled packaging material.

The problem if the directional "mechanism" is damaged is that the various manufacturers all use very different sensing methods (whilst nearly all Anemometers are based on simple revolution/pulse-counting). Davis use a potentiometer, Fine Offset a magnetic method (Reed/Hall switches) and there are numerous other possibilities. Do you know how the Oregon sensor detects the angular direction? Unlike the Fine Offset section, I can't see any hardware description in the Oregon section of the forum, but it might be worth reading and/or posting there.

Unfortunately the vane was badly damaged but my buddy had an extra one which he gave me so for the moment I will be able to get my anemometer back working. I will poke around the oregon scientific site which I waS not aware of. Thanks for that information. So with this new lease on life II will be able to continue on.

You could try Googling, or the manufacturer. But most likely you'd have to make your own design. That would be greatly helped if you had a large part of the broken one to copy from/make symmetrical to. A friend with a 3D printer and some experience would be a great help.
