New website not updating

I have my first website
www.komokaweather.com I thought successfully set up, but it is not updating and seems to be frozen at 22:42 which is just after the initial upload. I use GoDaddy.com for hosting and their support has been helpful to ensure the files are uploaded through FileZilla FTP. During the re-uploading the following message is displayed Error: Connection closed by server. GoDaddy.com says it's a third-party issue. Have set Cumulus Configuration Internet Web Settings as Auto Upload, Interval 1 mins, Enable Realtime, Realtime interval 3 secs. Any suggestions?
Also, wanted to change the header text and have changed that in the Cumulus Configuration but that is also not being changed, likely due to the freeze up.
This is all new to me as I know virtually nothing about website set up, but so far have come a long way by following (trying) the help and instructions in Cumulus, FileZilla and GoDaddy.com. Any help is appreciated.
Paul.

Hi Paul
I suggest we have a look at your FTP log file for Cumulus. That will probably give us more of a clue. Also, you do not seem yo have uploaded all the library files needed by Cumulus as your page is rather 'bare' looking. But we can fix that too.
You need to turn on the log in the Configuration Menu and then I suggest you force a web update (rather than wait for one) by clicking File, Web update
Some details here on the log ...

If it means nothing to you, upload the log and we can have a look.

What do GoDaddy say is the third-party issue which is causing their server to close the connection?

Thanks.
Problem likely caused by me because of lack of knowledge and experience and a bit of haste (egerness), and have deleted all the uploads and starting fresh again. Will keep you posted or call for help again if needed.

After fresh upload which seems to go okay, there is an error 403 - Forbidden when I try to go to the website, and also error 404. Attached is the FTP log file. After doing the Web Update in Cumulus there are now more files added in the weather and images folders of the Remote Site, but nothing in the root directory.
Last night when talking to GoDaddy.com support they said there must be an index html file and everything must be in the root directory. With their assistance I copied all the Cumulus webfiles directory files to the root directory and that got the page up properly but then seemed to freeze-up imediately.
This is error message when going to
www.komokaweather.com -
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

You're uploading the files to the weather directory, and
http://www.komokaweather.com/weather/ seems to be working fine from here?

Your files (or at least one of your uploads) are here:
http://www.komokaweather.com/weather/
The reason you get the error looking @
http://www.komokaweather.com is because there is no recognizable index or main page/
Your realtime.txt is OK and updating every 10s.
Edit: Oops - crossed post with Steve

Thanks, and I think I got it now. Since everything is uploaded to a 'weather' folder one needs to add the /weather to the domain to get to that page. Presumably if I have a main page at
www.komokaweather.com and then have a 'weather' link, that would get to my Cumulus pages. How would I go about that? I have been reading this forum for quite a while and very informative but all those references to html script, etc. is way beyong my current knowledge (and I see there are many others on this forum the same way). Presumably, like GoDaddy.com assisted me last night, I could install in the root directory and then the Cumulus page would come up immediately from
www.komokaweather.com but are there any drawbacks to that i.e. freeze-up like last night? I would like to add more things to the website as I understand more over time. I know, realy easy
if you know how
Again thanks so much.
Paul.

The only drawback to putting it in the root is that, well, it's in the root. So the Cumulus index page is your 'home' page. If you wanted to do anything else with your web site, then it would make sense to have a different 'home' page linking to your Cumulus pages. If you don't want to start dabbling with your own web pages for now, then putting Cumulus in the root would probably be the way to go.

Thanks Steve, that makes sense.

One thing you could to temporarily until you decide to do something else... is to put a simple index.php file in your web root that points to your weather site.
file: index.php
Code: Select all
<?php
header("location: /weather");
?>
This will redirect anyone that lands on your webroot, to your weather site.
Later, if you want to add more to your website, you can replace that with a regular website page and go from there.
There are a number of other ways to do this but this is fairly simple.

Kevin,
That is exactly what I had in mind and thanks for the code, except that I have no idea how or what I need to create that file. Financial spreadsheet - no problem, membership/dues database - can do, golf handicapping in basic (>25 years ago with my PET) - done that, but this new stuff is a whole new language and while I am currently bilingual that is not one of my languages. So what am I doing here then you say? I enjoy the hobby and feels good to see results of my endeavours, have some time available, want to learn, and yes... hoping to benefit from the help from people like you and other local and family contacts. Again thanks for the information.
Paul.

You could use the attached file, but rename it to index.php and upload it to your website.

Thanks again Kevin, I've done that and it works, but you already knew it would. That's one small step for some; one giant step for me.
