Raspberry Pi1 B+

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

Raspberry Pi1 B+

Post by dubmuffin »

Hello,

Hope I'm posting in the right place!

It has been several years since I visited this forum but we have just revived the Fine Offset 1080 and dug out the old Raspbery Pi. I've been trying to familiarise myself with the operating system and any updates - I realise I am a few years behind now - like trying to use Windows NT. I have installed mono (probably incorrectly) and MX but I'm getting errors so I suspect my stick in a command, click return and hope approach is not working.

Should I persevere or reformat the card and install the image file? Iv'e not much to lose. Will a Pi 1 B+ (512Mb) support the latest op system (Scratch/Buster?) It is a 16Gb card. Alternatively could I downgrade mono to one that works with Wheezy? I got as far as looking at the dashboard but can't update the settings file from the browser without an error [object Object] so I think I have made a mess.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Claire

The pre-built image is probably the best way forward

Just a suggestion but you will get much better results with a R Pi 4 and a 32Gb sd card. It is much faster than the R Pi 1 and not overpriced.

I probably would get a better result upgrading but it seems a bit of a waste of money, or at least a waste of equipment as I already have one and I suspect that running cumulus isn't going to put much strain on the system. I'd rather reuse if possible.

See this recent thread. Seems that there are some challenges on working with an older Pi.

Thanks for pointing me to that discussion, it is very useful. I think I will attempt a fresh install using the image, nothing to lose and if mono comes with it I think that will help, as that seems to be a bit of a sticking point. I'll be using SSH and don't need any desktop/GUI/Webserver capabilities. I guess I just wanted to use what I had, as I have a tendency to get distracted with other hobbies (hence my 5 year ish absence from here!)

I do quite like a challenge - I'll try and resist starting now and save it for tomorrow and let you know how I get on

You'll be pleased to know that the process have gone rather smoothly so far. I had and early mono exception/object reference error when checking the status but on restart that had gone. I think perhaps it is a little slow to repopulate when I restart CumulusMX, but we are all so impatient these days, I'm prepared to wait. I'm now in the process of reinstating the uploads to various weather sites by editing the ini, and hopefully get a little website together if I don't get distracted, so I expect I'll be posting questions in other parts of the forum soon.
