A plant pot just containing water in my brothers garden produced this unexpected ice spike today. I've never seen one before...

I've never seen one before either....except for in Minecraft Ice Spikes Biome. But I guess that doesn't count.

I might dig about here. Have photographed a few accidental creations over the years.

Usually a result of a drippy outdoor tap in Winter.
Replacing the washers is usually not a priority in Winter as the slow drip helps a little with bursting pipes.

That veritasium btw has many interesting videos about physics. I subscribed a year ago or so. Really good.

Looking at the pictures and the explanation it seems to me that the plant pot ice spike grew a secondary spike at the top.

The main one grew, started freezing over at the top, then a smaller secondary spike grew out the partially frozen over top of the primary.

I'm not sure of the temperature at my brothers house, but at my house it got down to a minimum of -4.6°C which is in the sort of ideal range indicated in that video.
