TESTING - Raspberry Pi Image for Cumulus MX

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

TESTING - Raspberry Pi Image for Cumulus MX

Post by mcrossley »

Following the discussions about making it easier for folks who may not be a Linux guru to get going with a Raspberry Pi, one of the suggestions was to create a pre-configured OS image.

This wasn't universally perceived as the best option, but I thought it was worth giving it a try.

To that end I have created an image for Cumulus v3.9.0 with Raspberry Pi OS Lite (Buster) and some basic instructions - that need expanding.

Any volunteers to test this out and generate some feedback?

hi Mark, could I try out the new image for the Pi please. I do tend to find it hardgoing when trying to setup a new working image so I would like to try this one out.

Hello,
my pi is coming this week. It would be easier for me to test the image. So would be there too.
Which OS do I have to install on the PI?

Mark, I guess this should work on all models of Pi (might be worth saying so explicitly?). I don't know whether people feel that a Pi 1 or Pi Zero generally has enough horsepower, but I've run CMX on a Pi0 in the past and it seemed OK. A Pi0W (the wireless version) in a minimal case running headless really is a very inexpensive and low-power (consumption) and unobtrusive option for adding CMX to a station.

For the record, my image test is on a Pi 4 (4GB RAM), but that's probably overkill - just what I had to hand.

I do run MX on a Pi0W as a test system. In general it runs OK, the catch-up processing can be a quite a bit slower than normal though.

I have just uploaded a new image file - rpi-CMX-3.9.0-1.zip - the only change in this image is that it has IPv6 disabled by default.

Actually, I wonder if there'll be a new Pi0 before too long - maybe same form factor & connectors & lowish price but better CPU/speed (not sure what they'd call it though - rather painted themselves into a corner with the zero numbering).

See the Pi4 compute Module launched today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiHgmNBOzkc) - probably not relevant to CMX but maybe the designers now have some time to work on Pi0 NG?

(Edit: Though, thinking a little more clearly, maybe a Pi 3A+ offers the best price/performance compromise to run CMX headless? And probably is close to a next generation Pi0, albeit about double the price. Not many choices of case for the A series though - the official one is low-cost but but rather marmite in looks.)

Hi Daniel,

The OS is included in the image, so you don't need to worry about versions, etc. I believe it is a version of Debian Linux known as Raspberry Pi OS.

Goodmorning,
I would like to test CMX on this image. I just bought a PI4 with 4Gb, just as an intro to an IoT class I started this week. I also have a Fine offset station which's log file sits in CMX for Mac.
I would like to set it up in Pi4, running constantly.
thank you

Hello, the installation was very easy. Cumulus started cleanly.
Unfortunately Cumulus no longer works with the Meteobridge IP and port 22222.

I too would love to test this. It will save me a lot of time converting from version 1 to my pi.
