Map showing Cumulus users

Post by RayProudfoot »

There used to be a map showing the location of Cumulus users. It hasn't been available for several years. Any chance it could be brought back?
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

That question has been asked before. The list of users is not maintained any longer. There seems to have been a map of this list but I never saw it.
I made an automatic map for CumulusUtils users (which you can see on my site).

If there is interest, I could modify it for general Cumulus use.

That would require some changes however and the basefile would need to be served by the cumulus domain of course (it is now my own domain) and the code would need to be incorporated in Cumulus.

Since the introduction of the lockfile mechanism it runs without need of support.
Users who don't tick alive for a week are automatically removed from the map.
The list of users / sites etc... could be maintained automatically if wanted.

Hi Hans,

I couldn't find the map on your website probably because I'm not familiar with Dutch. Would users need to be running CumulusMX in order to have their position shown?

It would need more than just me to make it worthwhile. Let's see if others feel the same about a user map.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

Hi Ray, Just some clicking around would probably have brought you the map pretty quick, but to accommodate my English speaking friends I just generated the site in English :D
Go: Menu=>Misc=>User Map

Although it was meant specifically for the users of pwsFWI and later the users of the website generator, no, you don't need to use CumulusUtils as a whole, you could even use it stand-alone although that was not what it was meant for, so agreed, don't bother if you are the only one.

Both pwsFWI and maps can be used as a module.

But of course, as I already remarked, it would be most useful to incorporate it in the CMX executable and have it automatically be generated.
But seeing the enthusiasm of the British for this type of site/info sharing, I don't think it will be a great success.
Anyway, time for a poll? ;)

I was a fan of the original map. I used it regularly to search out stations that were being affected by adverse weather.

It was a simple map that just showed the location with a link to the users website. No data was shown.

Hans, thanks. I counted a total of 18 stations with zero in the UK. :?

If so few people are providing data it hardly seems worthwhile making a map available. Cumulus website seems the logical place to show its users around the world. The original map was useful as Mapantz has said.

Same with me, quick round to all participating stations.
I never saw that old map but it was manually maintained and that always will be a problem sooner or later.

Same with the map I made.

That's the number of active cutils users (there are some more who don't use the map).
Don't look at the number, look at the map system.

That is why, to make it worthwhile, you would need to make it part of CMX so the the map would be automatically generated at startup/once a week or so, then to be included by anybody who wished to do so, and yes automatically in the standard website.

Then it becomes useful even if some who do not wish to be known they exist might exit.
Anyway, start lobbying ;)

I like the Cumulusutils map as it is specific for users of Cumulusutils.

I also do recall the original Cumulus Map and Users List and, like Mapanz, found it helpful to see where other Cumulus users were (by country/Region). I also remember it was quite a chore to keep it updated with lots of dead links and believe someone other than Steve had taken it on to update. It would be good to have it again...

Hans, if it could only be viewable via CMX why would I, as a user of the original Cumulus, be interested? ;)

I have no idea how popular it might be and I wouldn’t want anyone to go to a lot of work to make it happen. It was just something I thought could be useful to check in on the weather stations around the world in a better way than WU.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

@Ray Aha..., still using C1 :)

It is not only viewable via CMX... that is not what I said. But CMX is the future so that would be the logic place to put it.
What you could do is, is run the independent creation of the map and try to fix that in with C1. Makes it more difficult: true.
C1 has no more distribution so it will be difficult to get your wanted mass because everybody would have to add that program to C1 one way or the other.
I don't know, but manually making a map does seem a pretty hopeless undertaking. This is what I have to offer, if you can use it, use it. If not, not. 8-)

Hans, why change if it isn’t broken? I am happy with the data shown on my website.

It sounds like a lot of effort to get a map of Cumulus users shown. I guess it’s not something that’s likely to be taken up.
Cheers,
Ray, Cheshire.

I'm not arguing that. It all depends how bad you want a map. ;)

There is a very old list of users here:
https://cumuluswiki.org/a/Cumulus_Users

with a map reference in Google map for each of them.
