Looking for help understanding Pressure

Post by daj »

Hi all

I'm looking for a volunteer who can help me understand pressure. Ideally with a view to writing a small (or long) article for the Cumulus Wiki.

Let me be honest, as I am amongst friends -- I see my pressure figure going up and down but I have no idea what it means and what impact it has on the weather. I "think" is has some bearing on the forecast but I'm not sure.

There are a few articles I can find on the internet all about Pressure but they are very wordy and written for a far more technical person than me. I would like to understand how changes in pressure affect the weather.

Anyone want to help me understand it and help write something? The wiki has short articles on Wind and Rain measurement so a Pressure one would be great

thanks
David

Ray,

It's certainly a good starting point. I do not think we could simply plagiarize it (even although their copyright notice may allow it 'for Non-commercial Reproduction')

thanks Mike, I saw that one -- too wordy as an intro I think. I also want to understand how pressure affect the weather.

A few more sites that explain it Dave...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/bbcweather ... arts.shtml

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Meteorology- ... e-rain.htm

Actually the whole scientific explanation of how pressure and weather are related is infinitely complicated.
I still don't understand exactly how the weather works; and to some extent neither do forecasters.
They rely on 'models' of how the various elements of the weather acted in the past to predict what they may do in the future.
It's a subject you could spend the rest of your life learning about.

I have written a simplistic tome on pressure and wind on my website which you are more than welcome to use. I fly kites and take photos from them and as a kite flyer you have to understand at least some of the basics. As you will see it is a general intro to the subject. Another way of looking at pressure is that if there is a large drop or rise in pressure over a very short distance on the earth's surface then there will be strong winds. If there is an equal pressure over great distances then there will be little or no wind.

My take can be found here: http://www.kap.toadstone.com/Weather/windformation.html
