CumulusMX as a service, Win10 stopped.

From build 3044 the development baton passed to Mark Crossley. Mark has been responsible for all the Builds since. He has made the code available on GitHub. It is Mark's hope that others will join in this development, but at the very least he welcomes your ideas for future developments (see Cumulus MX Development suggestions).

CumulusMX as a service, Win10 stopped.

Post by jon_iz »

I'm running CMX 3093 on Win10, as a service.
CMS seems to have stopped again this morning for now apparent reason that i can see.
The laptop is still up and running and doesn't sleep, and the other apps are still happily ticking over.

Looking at the windows event log there are two entries for CMX this morning:
first:
- System
- Provider
[ Name] CumulusService
- EventID 0
[ Qualifiers] 0
Level 4
Task 0
Keywords 0x80000000000000
- TimeCreated
[ SystemTime] 2020-09-05T06:31:01.285021900Z
EventRecordID 7795
Channel Application
Computer MB7UCW
Security
- EventData
Service stopped successfully.

Second:
- System
- Provider
[ Name] CumulusService
- EventID 0
[ Qualifiers] 0
Level 4
Task 0
Keywords 0x80000000000000
- TimeCreated
[ SystemTime] 2020-09-05T06:31:01.285021900Z
EventRecordID 7796
Channel Application
Computer MB7UCW
Security
- EventData
PowerEvent handled successfully by the service.

There's nothing standing out in the windows logs why this has happened, it's pretty much an isolated entry for CMX at this time.
This also happened with previous release after a few days of use.

Anyone got any thoughts on this one?

This looks like power management turning something off. You haven't by any chance got the power management on the USB hubs turned on as that will see a power drain and turn off your USB connection. Go to device manager and right click on each USB hub and select the Power Management tab.
If "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is ticked, untick it and click on Save.

Also make sure your Power plan is set for high performance and then change the setting, goto change advanced power settings and disable "USB selective suspend"

USB selective suspend was already disabled.
All power saving options in the (balanced) plan were disabled anyway.

The service stopped again unexpectedly last night, so debugging is now on....

At this rate it might be going back to running in a dos window... :?

I can see what may be happening, I'm not taking action on the specific power status changes I want, and any change is triggering a service stop. So it could be switching from mains to battery etc that is triggering the stop.

I'll get this fixed for the next release.

Tnx Mark,
debug files attached for todays stop - (nothing obvious logged)
I've only attached the last rotated log file.

I got to the bottom of the last report... I was out working last night.
It turned out that a breaker tripped last night and the laptop had dropped to battery for a few minutes - so this stop service stop is explained as a power change - the laptop didn't suspend and carried on running however.

Looks like 3094 may have fixed this issue - pulling the power supply on the laptop doesn't kill CMX now.
Tnx
