i am about to re-install cumulus on my pc after formatting my pc where is the best place to install the programme as when it was on my pc before i could not find all the files on my pc

I'd recommend anywhere outside c:\Programs (which unfortunately is the default).
For example: d:\cumulus if you have multiple logical disks. That will keep all Cumulus files in (subfolders in) that folder.

Why outside of the c:\programs\ directory?

WeatherLink and VWS used to default to c:\ but both have since changed in the last year or two to default to c:\programs as well. (Caused a fair bit of confusion for people that did not catch that on an update and then could not load their station past data history.) I never really knew why it would make any difference?

because on a Vista machine, Cumulus's data will not be stored with the program, but in an obscure folder somewhere in the user's directory. Difficult to find.

Yes - sounds like Andrew is running Vista. I started writing Cumulus before Vista appeared so didn't know any better (you shouldn't do it in XP either, apparently). It's probably a bit late to change now. Cumulus 2, should it ever appear, does things by the book.
