Steve,

That suggestion I made was based on my mistaken assumption you were running Windows Vista. Since I now know that isn't the case, you should disregard the compatibility mode option. And since Windows XP can't be run in Administrator mode (again, like Vista can), that idea is out the window too.

I actually ran Cumulus on Windows XP (SP3) for six months. Though I've since moved it over to another computer running Vista, I have to say I did experience your problem once. It happened when I first installed Cumulus. Can't remember, now, just what the problem was but seems I uninstalled and reinstalled Cumulus and it took right off.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Frankly, your situation has me a little perplexed.

Thanks for suggestion. OK - so I right click the icon, and under properties, Compatibility...ooops. No Windows XP shown! Only 95, 98, 2000 etc.
Is everyone who uses Cumulus called Steve?

We go from bizarre to bizarrer. I renamed the old Cumulus program, then downloaded the new version 1.8.8. Guess what happened when I ran it? It froze with the small "Downloading data" window. I'm going to attach the diags.zip file to this, to see if Steve 1 has any comments. Otherwise I'll uninstal all copies of Cumulus and try yet again. What would we be doing if we didn't have computers to frustrate us? Steve in Spain.

Thanks. This is another indication that Cumulus is having problems with your USB:

2009-12-12 09:15:16 : Request EW data block, addr = 000000
2009-12-12 09:15:16 : EWUSB: EW startup data line 01 03 03 B0 20 A1 E0 B0 20
2009-12-12 09:15:16 : EWUSB: EW startup data line 02 55 AA FF FF FF FF FF FF
2009-12-12 09:15:16 : EWUSB: EW startup data line 03 0F 20 02 3B 09 00 00 00
2009-12-12 09:15:16 : EWUSB: EW startup data line 04 00 00 00 B8 07 00 90 72
2009-12-12 09:15:16 : EWUSB: Bad startup block 0, discarding. Byte 0 = 03 Byte 0 = 03

The 'line 02' that starts 55 AA should be the first line of the block. This is the sort of problem I saw with people running Windows 2000.

But this is odd:

=============================== OS version info =================================
Platform : Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me.
OS Name : Windows 98 ()
(Major Version[ 4 ] Minor Version[ 10 ] Build Number[ 2222 ] Platform ID[ 1 ])
===================================================================================

This is the same PC from before that was running XP?

Did you put Cumulus in "compatibility mode" and forget to take it back out?

As a matter of interest, why haven't you updated to SP3 and other updates?

EA5

just some quick questions

What Motheboard are you running ?
What chipset is your motherboard running intel, Amd, VIA, Nvidia ?
what is your Northbridge Chipset ?

Processeor ?Video card ? Memory ?

you could try and update your board bios , as i have had problems with USB devices before and 9/10 were a driver or bios problem
have you allowed the Microsoft update to run on auto update ? if so see what has been updated, try a driver roll back
Xp would work 100% (on USB devices) then suddenly stop working with access problems ( never trust a Microsoft update to fix what was working)

OK guys. Thanks for all your comments. I think the time has come to give up. I uninstalled Cumulus and re-installed v 1.8.8. Same problem. I uninstalled, went back to a 'restore point' a week before the troubles began, re-installed Cumulus. Same problem. It simply won't transfer data from the Easyweather .dat file. Can't think of much else to do. Happy Christmas! Steve in [cold 4º] Spain.

I followed this thread yesterday as I had been having exactly the same problem. I ended up uninstalling and reindstalling cumulus, then turning off the computer, pulling the batteries out of the WS1081, changing the port the USB cable connected into and turning everything back on. No change, but for some reason I opened the task manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) ans switched tabs to processes and found cumulus.exe , and surprisingly the memory usage for it was increasing very slowly. It was doing something, albeit very slowly and in the background, so I left it to carry on and after about 5 minutes it started dowloaded records on the screen - yee ha!

Just thought I'd share in case it helps ...

It can take quite a while if there are a lot of logger entries to download, and it can appear that it's doing nothing while it's actually fetching them from the station.

Having given up last year [!!] I'm going to try Cumulus again today. If it says "Downloading Data" but nothing happens, I'll leave it running for half an hour. I'll let you know how I get on. ATB for 2010. Steve in sunny Spain.

Well darn it! It seems to be working perfectly. It's my New Year's present from Sandysoft, because to be honest, it's a super program, and I've missed having it on my screen. I'm looking forward to when v2 is fully operative maybe later this year.
Anyway - I'm going to check the FAQ to see if it's possible - and how step by step - to use ALL the data in the Easyweather .dat file not just from when I installed it.
One point - how would you recommend altering the Easy Weather .dat file? Is it editable? I need to remove one or two totally false entries. We appear to have had a wind speed of 3,160 kph at one time, which means we've been blown off the surface of the earth. I've also registered some silly rain fall figures, unless Noah came back in his ark. Steve EA5FJF.

If you have Easyweather .dat data that you'd like to transfer to Cumulus I can probably do the conversion for you.
(Then you can edit out the strange numbers).
Just send me a PM if you are interested.

Small window "Downloading Date. Please wait." stuck yet again. I was about to give up on Cumulus completely and just use the original software EasyWeather. So I clicked on the Easyweather icon. "Unable to download data" !!!! It seems that the problem WAS, indeed, the USB cable between the station and the computer, together with a dodgy USB socket on the computer. I send this post as it may just help someone else. My thanks to Steve the Boss and Ib who have been so helpful. Steve from Spain.
