Cumulus Support

This is my first post and hello to everyone, i purchased a WH1080 or WH1081 from Maplins yesterday, this is my first weather station.

its all set up and working fine, but the manual is fine for adjusting things but any tips you can pass on regarding operation, going to try to contact it to my computer tonight-should be interesting!

Hi Jim, and welcome to the forum.

I am a relative novice at the wether station stuff (the technical ins and ours of the weather) -- To be honest I only got one so that I could do a website with it but don't tell everyone on here.

I am sure the tips will come flooding in, however my biggest mistake was really in the positioning of the instruments. The WH1080 gives you all the necessary brackets to attached everything to the pole. My objective was to raise the instruments to a good height off the ground so I went for a new 8foot pole. Foolishly I attached the rain gauge at the top too. As a result I was getting false readings for rain as the little tipper inside the raingauge moved whenever it was a little windy.

Luckily the cables provided are long enough to allow my other instruments to be at the top of the pole and the rain collector sits on a solid platform a few feet off the ground.

I suppose the best thing you to do is to read through some of the threads on this section.

There are loads of mods you can do; the best one is probably making a better screen for the sensor/transmitter unit as the small round one provided is a bit inadequate and allows the sensor unit to warm up in sunshine resulting in readings to show 2 or 3 degrees above the real air temperature.

One thing to remember is that this is a budget unit and you must not be disappointed it you cannot get a 1% accuracy as compared with manual external instruments. You can improve it but not get it that accurate. That said, it's good enough for amateur recording.

I totally agree -- it's serves me well and hasn't let me down in 18 months

I found the wind gauge was out on mine, luckily I have a reliable top end weather station very close to me so was able to compare data for a given date and time, then work out the multiplier to use in the calibration screen of cumulus, in my case its was 1.50 for both mean and gust.

The rain gauge on min packed up within a week of it being up and running, but the replacement is working fine so far (touch wood).

Like jim this is my first post, I have also bought a WH1080 and am keen to pick up any tips .
I noticed that Daj is using windows and also OSX, do you use the mac for this software.
My main computer is a Mac but am at present using a very old slow windoze machine for
the WH1080, any help would be appreciated.

Hi Peter

I am indeed using OSx but not for Cumulus. I have a dedicated PC running Windows 7 that runs Cumulus for me. I did try running Cumulus under Bootcamp and also Fusion VMWare, both of which run Cumulus quite happily however it seemed a waste to use a Mac to run it on and I had a spare PC kicking around.

had no luck. Will probably upgrade the pc and like you use it solely for Cumulus.
