Filenames for monthly files

Post by dane »

Steve,
what are the naming rules and restrictions for the monthly files?
I know the names are <month><year>log.txt, e.g. nov09log.txt.
But do you care about the <month> part? - or is mainly for convenience to help us humans?
For instance, on my Danish system the October file comes out as okt09log.txt - not oct09log.txt
And what about a French system? would aug09log.txt (or 0909log.txt) be OK - or should it be aoû09log.txt for August?

Cumulus uses a combination of the dayfile.txt and the monthly log files to build the graphs so I would suggest you could not change the names.

As far as I know the dayfile.txt is used to build the daily rainfall and daily max/min/avg temperatures graphs. The monthly log files are used to build the others.

Or to put it another way ...

Daj and I have recently come to understand that Cumulus uses 'PC native' terms for dates.

In this case 'short' month name.

The data file_name format will always be the same, DEPENDENT UPON THE PC COUNTRY SETTINGS.

Cumulus obviously needs to read / write to these files, but it does make life interesting if you want to write a 'generic' piece of code (perl, php, etc.) to make use of these files outside of Cumulus - writing a personal 'one-shot' code for your (PC) language is much easier :?

Thank you daj and beteljuice for your answers.
I did a few experiments and found that Select-a-Graph ignores incorrectly named month files.

My problem is I need the French names for Cumulus month files for all months from January thru December
(for a conversion project).

So: would a French-speaking person be kind enough to tell me what the proper French names are, please :?:

Yes, I'm afraid I didn't know that the routines I used to generate the filenames would use the local names for months, until one day when someone sent me a file to look at it. It wasn't my intention, so I can only apologise for any problems it causes "third party" stuff.

I just make some tests on Cumulus log files.
"View : This month" works with inccorect local filenames :o , but "Select a graph don't" :(
I look how "Excel" manage the month name :

English French French short
january janvier janv.
february février févr.
march mars mars
april avril avr.
may mai mai
june juin juin
july juillet juil.
august août août
september septembre sept.
october octobre oct.
november novembre nov.
december décembre déc.

With the short names "Select a graph" works. :D

Not quite. The average wind speed and the number of gale days will be wrong (always zero).

Those short names you've posted are the same ones that Cumulus will uses on a French system - including the full stops, where present. For example, the January 2009 file is called "janv.09log.txt". May 2009 is "mai09log.txt".
