kph or km/h

Post by pinto »

Hi Steve

You don't have to change anything for me :) , but I noticed you use kph as an abbreviation for kilometre per hour (we in Belgium use km/h)

From Wikipedia
The kilometre per hour (American English: kilometer per hour) is a unit of both speed (scalar) and velocity (vector). The unit symbol is km/h or km·h-1; however, the colloquial abbreviations "kph" and "kmph" are sometimes also used in English-speaking countries, in analogy to mph, although these are not in accordance with international scientific standards.

No, I use mph :) I'm very old and kilometres mean nothing to me. But I use mm for rain.

But yes, I should probably use km/h, if that's what you normally use and it looks better to you. I should probably use kn for knots too, instead of kts, but I think that doesn't matter so much.

I'll change the kph to km/h.

Sometime I think we all should be using the same things. But I would hate to see MPH and miles be replaced, when I am driving. But happy to accept Centigrade and mm for rainfall, in fact I even get annoyed when there is a constant reference to farenheit in the TV forecasts.

I have to use knots when recording the wind for the UK Met Office, but most observers in this country go for MPH.

It must be a nightmare for software designers trying to please us all :D
