HTML dilemma
Sorry to somewhat hog this section but this is rather new territory for me. Someone is helping me customise my web pages to allow me to 'meddle' and upgrade later on. However, Trevor, my helper, has come up against a problem which is even new to him, I wonder if anyone can help. Below is his complete text he sent to his 'design' forum with as yet, no reply.
"Hi All
Am having a problem with an IFrame. I am attempting to insert weather data which is updated every couple of minutes. Because of this I thought the iFrame would be best solution to just link to the data pages which are automatically uploaded as html pages.
Have a look here:
http://www.barrypemb.f2s.com/weather/index.html
As you see the data in the iframe looks fine and works on Mac and PC Browsers. If you have a look at at the Today Page the table runs off at right side. This page has navigation code removed from the bottom to make it integrate with the navigation at the top - see the page Record - this page is in the centre.
I want the pages to appear as the Record page.
I think it is something to do with the code on the pages I am linking to but I don’t know what to look for.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. Problem exists on PC Browsers. Safari on Mac - all looks well!
The original pages as they upload are here: Note that the width of these can grow - is this something I should consider as I am placing in an iFrame.
http://www.barrypemb.f2s.com
Thanks
Trev
Much obliged if anyone can help

Re: HTML dilemma
I've moved this, as not everyone will read the Davis section.
Your 'Today' page looks perfect in Firefox, by the way.

Re: HTML dilemma
On 'Today' and 'Yesterday' pages the stylesheet has been invoked TWICE for some reason.
It would appear that IE browsers are adding the side margins (which are declared as a percentage) together, other (absolute) margins are not a problem.
Code: Select all
<head>
<link href="weatherstyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<meta name="description" content="Sandbach weather data">
<meta name="keywords" content="Cumulus, Sandbach weather data, weather, data, weather station">
<title>Sandbach weather</title>
<link href="weatherstyle.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css">
</head>

Re: HTML dilemma
Works fine on all browsers I tested other than IE8/7.
Saldy IE is not as forgiving as other browsers, and sometimes also forgetful of its 'container'
For saftey(!) add a new <div> to contain your content better.
Change: the second <div> contains the formatting to 100% of the previous <div>
You also need to close the new <div>
Change: Again, the second </div>
Also, Your CSS is being loaded twice which may cause problems.
I really do not like the javascript that resizes the window. I hate when a site does that, and also it does not always resize correctly. iFrames are not well supported in earlier browsers so you need to take that into account if you REALLY want to go down that route
There are other ways to fix the IE problem, but that is a quick way!
Hope it helps -- there may be other solutions come along from others too.

Hi Trev here
(Friend of guy who posted original)
Thankyou for your fast response.
I have removed the duplication CSS link but problem still seems to be there.
daj
can you clarify the code and insertion point for the content width = 100%
Sorry - I'm not a Code Warrior!
Kind regards and again Thanks!https://cumulus.hosiene.co.uk/posting.php ... b4b54432c8#

David
1st Class response and thanks for the PDF!
You're a star. Your fix has sorted the width problem on today and yesterday pages. I will add the div to all the other pages too.
NOW another problem . . .
The pages that are being uploaded by my mate Barry (and I am linking to purely via url to the iFrame) are not updating!
ie: the data should refresh every 2 mins and the Live wind dials on the Gauges page are also not refreshing.
He is uploading to a sub folder in his public folder on his server and I have the pages in another folder for testing
then I will move them into public and the site will be complete.
This perhaps is an upload issue and I'm sorry for being a pain about this.
Any help would be much appreciated as we are almost there!

The main site appears to be here... http://www.barrypemb.f2s.com and seems live,
However your iFrame is referencing http://www.barrypemb.f2s.com/weather/

Re: HTML dilemma
The actual pages are uploading OK (http://www.barrypemb.f2s.com/) so the problem must be something to do with the way you're including them in the other pages.warp1 wrote:This perhaps is an upload issue and I'm sorry for being a pain about this.

Re: HTML dilemma
Can I suggest that if you are using iFrames then you do a browser check. IE6 can not handle iFrames and you user will not get a good experience on your site.
Here's some code that will check and given them a warning and suggestion to upgrade
This will give you something likes this...
Sadly IE6 still occupies 13% of browser usage -- which is shocking is IE6 us so insecure and dated!

Just an idea!

Code: Select all
<!--[if lte IE 6]><style type="text/css">#ie6msg{border:3px solid #090; margin:8px 0; background:#cfc; color:#000;}#ie6msg h4{margin:8px; padding:0;}#ie6msg p{margin:8px; padding:0;}#ie6msg p a.getie8{font-weight:bold; color:#006;}#ie6msg p a.ie6expl{font-weight:normal; color:#006;}</style><div id="ie6msg"><h4>Did you know that your browser is out of date?</h4><p>To get the best possible experience using our website we recommend that you upgrade your browser to a newer version. The current version is <a class="getie8" href="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx">Internet Explorer 8</a>. The upgrade is free. If you're using a PC at work you should contact your IT administrator.</p><p>If you want to you may also try some other popular Internet browsers like <a class="ie6expl" href="http://getfirefox.com">Firefox</a>, <a class="ie6expl" href="http://www.opera.com">Opera</a>, or <a class="ie6expl" href="http://www.apple.com/safari/download/">Safari</a></p></div><![endif]-->http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php

Re: HTML dilemma
Code: Select all
.. ie: the data should refresh every 2 mins ...Do you mean you are uploading data every two minutes ?
The pages are 'static' ie. in each of the cumulus page headers you would need to put a meta page refresh tag, then the frame contents would update at whatever period set.
