Is there a way to disable the wind gust ?!

Post by Eugen-Oradea »

Is there a way in the Cumulus software to disable the reporting of the wind gust, especially on the internet ?!
Thanks, Eugen, Oradea.

On the internet, you could change the pages so the wind gust isn't present. For the graphs, you would have to remove the wind graph and thus also lose the average speed.

You could edit the web page template and remove it.....todayT.htm for example

I would like to maintain the wind speed and the wind speed graph but not the wind gust because as I have observed sometimes instead of 6.3 km/h it shows 63 km/h when the wind speed is only 3 or 4 km/h, is there a way to fix some limits between 2 consecutive readings like in the case of the temperature reading ?! Or to have an alternative to reject all wind speeds above, let's say 60-70 km/h or reject the following wind speed and wind gust as bad to stop these bad readings ?!
The wind speed is OK but the wind gust shows some errors a couple of times per day.
The same stuff happens to the rain, instead of 282 mm it shows 2820 mm and ruins completely the daily graph. The rest is flawless after the insertion of that limitation between the 2 consecutive readings.

It already ignores high wind speeds, but 60-70 km/h isn't particularly high for many people, that sort of speed is very common here. The cutoff is 50 m/s (180 km/h). I could make this value configurable (via cumulus.ini) fairly easily, if you think it would help. It's not so easy to do the same 'difference between readings' as for temperature because there can be large differences between wind readings anyway, when the wind is gusting.

I can put in a check similar to the 'max temperature' difference for rain, but with the rain counter there is always the danger that it has actually permanently increased, so Cumulus would continue to ignore it from that point. There are no (simple) solutions that work in every situation.

It'd be great if you could give me a solution in the cumulus.ini with a wind gust speed limit.
My wind sensor is only 3 m above the ground and the wind speed very seldom exceeds 10 or 15 km/h, mainly is between 0-10 km/h.
The wind is not very active in this area because I live on a foothill and the north-west, north and north-east are naturally shielded against strong winds.
I would also like to have an option to disable the rain sensor when is not raining and to avoid these bad readings like today when it was not raining at all but I had at the rainfall rate a bad reading: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... IBIHOROR10
Same stuff with the wind gust, but I don't want to disable the wind sensor only to limit the windgust speed that exceeds too much the windspeed.
Thanks, Eugen, Oradea

OK, I can do that, it's easy enough.

Can you show me an extract from Nov09log.txt for the period around that time (include a few entries before and after)?

I will try to save it next time it happens because every time I see something like this I enter the log and modify the bad reading to have normal graphs in the select-a-graph area.
Do you want the whole log for november or just the section with the errors or bad readings, as I call them ?!
Thanks, Eugen, Oradea.

Just the section with the bad readings, with a few good readings either side. I just want to see what happens to the rain counter.

Well I found an example only with a rain error.
I hope it helps...

I didn't have to wait too long to have a windgust error.
Here it is.
I hope it helps...

And there is another example in a very short period of time, same all windgust.
I think a limitation of the windgust would stop these errors to show up, I hope...

And another few examples, depicted today, of the bad wind gusts reporting.
If there is a way, please, help me correct it !

Switch to a direct serial connection. Or a better serial/USB adapter, some apparently work better than others.

I have spent hours and hours in the past looking at data from serial/USB connected La Crosse stations, and not been able to find a way to do anything about it. This is why I say I do not support this combination.

But I'll put in the 'max wind' cutoff. But looking at your graph, I'm not sure how much help that is going to be, as some of your peaks aren't very high anyway.

What do I have to put in the Cumulus.ini to thave this maximum wind cutoff ?!
I'm willing to try to see if there is a change, I'm opened to try whatever solution there may be.
It's a pity that there's no solution in eliminating these errors because of the USB adapter.
At least, compared to the others, I have an option, to get that multi serial port PCI card.
Thanks, Eugen, Oradea
