Unable to view history after crash

After both a Fine Offset 1081 a nasty windows crash and re-installing Cumulus I cannot view previous history in graphs or "this month" etc and "All time records" start from today. Although extremes etc show previous data
Previous monthly data was copied from a back up, but the original altime.rec file was corrupted.
Any way of getting Cumulus to generate an updated altime.rec file using the historic data?

You probably have corruptions/errors in one or more monthly log files. Which 'this month's don't work for which you have data?

No; only the 'lowest max' and 'highest min' are generated from the log files. Do you not have a suitable alltime.rec backup from the Cumulus backup folder?

Unfortunately, although there are log.txt files for every month from November 2008 to date, none show under View Month etc (I was incorrect in that they DO show up under View Select a graph). I now see that the "missing" data appears to be included in the yearly Averages and Extremes view

Unfortunately almost the whole of the Cumulus folder including the backup folder was corrupted
The monthly log.txt data came from a separate external back up system.
(Looks like I need to externally back up the alltime.rec file as well)
I was hoping that Cumulus could regenerate history from the log.txt files:-(

If Select-A-Graph works OK, then your monthly log files are OK. The 'This month' etc displays are generated from dayfile.txt. Most, if not all, of the all-time records can be regenerated fairly easily by importing dayfile.txt into a spreadsheet and sorting on each column. It sounds as though you don't have a dayfile.txt?

If you're taking backups, you should just back up the entire 'data' folder: http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/index.php?ti ... my_data.3F

Your system date format: date/time : 2009-11-03
Your "Startdate" in cumulus.ini: exception message : '25/11/2008' is not a valid date.

Windows sulks and causes Cumulus to crash when it asks it to parse the date. You need to get them both to the same format.

If you want me to have a look at dayfile.txt to see why 'this month' isn't working, just upload it.

After half a dozen muckle drams, I seem now to be almost there. (hospital?).

Although Win 7 displayed the system time (CP.. system) in the same format as in Cumulus .ini restoring the system default settings cured the particular aspect where it gave an error on viewing .
(As a matter of interest, everything was perfectly ok using the "trial version" of Win 7. In fact some other things now do not work with the retail version of Win 7. Whereas they did with the trial version)
Now "View this month" does not work (dayfile.txt attached) and Alltime records are all of today's date:-(

You have a large gap in dayfile.txt:

So 'this month' presumably just doesn't work after June?

Is this the latest backup of dayfile.txt you had? Is the problem perhaps that you have two sets of files because of the 'virtual store' issue in Vista and Windows 7? Have you put everything in the correct place? Your description of what you're seeing with all-time records suggests that you have perhaps put a backup into Program Files instead of virtual store.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
By using bits of various corrupted files I can now view all months.
Only problem remaining seems to be that Alltime records shows today as a record for everything.

Did you use a backup alltime.rec file? If so, I can only think that you haven't put it in the correct place.

Yes I ahve used a number of backup files of alltime.rec and ensure they go to the correct place.
I have also ensured that Cumulus is in a folder that windozey should not know exists!

Interestingly, if I use an alltime.rec file from my laptop, which works ok there, it still shows records for today only on this system under win 7.

Back to the quantity of Muckle drams. I'm past the 2wee dram" stage...... hic

The only ways that I can think of where that could happen would be if the file wasn't in the right place, or Cumulus is failing to read/write it for some reason. Do the all-time records carry on when you restart Cumulus, or do they start again from that point? If Cumulus is succesfully using an alltime.rec file somewhere to remember the records, but it isn't using the one you've installed, then it must be saving it somewhere other than where you think it's saving it.

If you look in the latest file in the diags folder, there will be a line which says where the alltime.rec file is being loaded from (or at least, where Cumulus thinks it is being loaded from, if Windows doesn't get in the way). What does it say?

Hi Steve
Cumulus was writing to the correct file E:\Cumulus\data\alltime.rec.
Today it showed alltime records from yesterday and today.
For some reason all of the "alltime" backup files used seemed corrupt and I am still none the wiser as to why the file from the laptop did not work.
However, I have now found a "good" alltime file from 6 months or so ago on an "xp macine" which "works" in as much as it shows records from back then (presumably Cumulus will not fill in the missing records, if there are any?)

I'll have another bottle of the "water of life" ...... now gone past the muckle dram stage... and settle for how it now is.

Yes, you've clearly been doing the right thing, and installing in E:\Cumulus is a good move and avoids the virtual store shenanigans. I can't explain why some of your backup alltime.rec files don't work. If you want to send me one, I can have a look at it.

There's no way to get Cumulus to fill in the all-time records, the only way is a manual approach using dayfile.txt and a spreadsheet. It wouldn't be too hard to add the code to Cumulus to do it for you, but...

In Cumulus 2 I am trying to get away from this sort of problem by just using the single database, so the all-time records are calculated on-the-fly from the database each time they are required. There are a number of disadvantages to this approach, and I may have to compromise a bit, but I think the advantages of just having one source of data outweigh the disadvantages.
