I think what happens is that it eventually gets the signal and synchronises; then if it looses the signal the icon disappears but the station still runs from it's internal quartz clock (hence you still seeing the accuracy).
When it gets a good signal again it resynchronises and the icon appears. My icon has been there for a couple of weeks but disappeared this morning due to the bad weather conditions (I assume).
Just my theory. ;)
