I've just downloaded and installed the Cumulus software as I too feel that the Davis software is somewhat 'tired'. Should the records alrady stored in the datalogger (from the 1st October in my case) get downloaded automatically or will Cumulus only start from when I made its first connection i.e. today?

By default, it doesn't download data from before you started it for the first time, but you can force it to do so:
