Windows 7 restore Cumulus from XP

Post by jjocsak »

Has anyone done this yet?

I installed Cumulus 1.8.8 and then copied over the old Cumulus folder, the data is wrong and it is not using cumulus.ini for any settings.

After the original W7 install the .ini file is nowhere to be found.
Where is it storing its settings?

Hi Jeff,
I have been running Windows 7 for a couple of days now, and Installed cumulus and copied over the old Cumulus folder with out any problems.

Did you Install Cumulus in Program files folder on your Windows 7? if so that could be the reason for the problem you are having. it should be installed under the root of the Hard Drive like:
Computer os (c:)Cumulus It is also explained in the help file in Cumulus.

I hope this Helps if you need any more Info do not hesitate to come back to me

I have been using Windows 7 for about 2 months now... Not being a Microsoft promoter or supporter by nature, I must admit that Windows 7 has proven itself as being quite reliable.

Jeff, the files for Cumulus 1 (as opposed to Cumulus 2) should be located into the root directory of Cumulus (such as c:\cumulus) - the setting are in the 'cumulus.ini' file.

One thing you must be careful about is that this new installation (on Windows 7) uses the same directory structure...

Just to contradict you, Cumulus does not have to be installed in the root directory of the first drive, such as in 'c:\cumulus' - I have both versions of Cumulus (Cumulus 1 and Cumulus 2) installed on a secondary drive inside a sub-sub-directory, as such:

k:\xampp\tzouhalem\cumulus (for Cumulus 1.8.8...)
k:\xampp\tzouhalem\cumulus2 (for Cumulus 2.3556...)

Thanks, I reinstalled in the root and that fixed it.
I also had to uncheck "use active ftp mode" for FTP to work.

The explanation for this is that under Vista and Windows 7, programs can't write to the Program Files hierarchy unless they are run as administrator, so Windows redirects the written files to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Cumulus. Hence the recommendation in the readme.txt to install to c:\cumulus.

No to be picky (...well maybe a little bit...) can you explain why there is no such directory (nor any file with the name cumulus in it other than a couple of links) anywhere under the 'C:\Users\' sub-directories?

Both version of Cumulus have been installed on a secondary drive (ie: k:\xampp\tzouhalem\).

Yes, there won't be any Cumulus 'virtual store' unless you install to Program Files. The other 'gotcha' is that by default the folders are hidden!
