USB Cable Problem FYI

Post by Super-T »

I had lots of corrupted data today due to an intermittent USB connection. Opened up the desktop console and found a bad solder joint. The pin from the USB socket could be moved even though the soldering looked good.
A quick dab of the soldering iron fixed the problem but then I spent a couple of hours correcting data. Had a good look around inside the console but didn't find any more suspect joints.
The problem was probably aggravated by me having to remove the USB cable to allow me to start up any games that use DirectX9. (shut down Cumulus 1st) :-)
I will update soon to Windows 7 just to avoid the DirectX problems.

Terry, it's always better to disconnect at the computer end of the cable; disconnecting from the console end always causes problems like you had; and with most other USB units.

If it's not easy to get to the computer end use an extension cable stuck to the desktop and disconnect there. ;)

Mike.

I'm just too lazy to go around the back but I've got a short extension now.....easier to replace :-)
I think the bad joint was always there.....just I made it worse.
